It depends on if your child needs the social practice or not. I'd say if the child has friends and gets along with people, leave him or her in. The child may help other children who are not as advanced.

On the other hand, if the child becomes bored and begins to act out, it's time to take him or her out and do some home schooling, or find a more advanced pre-school. Consider Head Start, for one, or a pre-school that caters toward kindergarten readiness.

Cheers, K

Just because a child is very smart does not mean the child should move ahead. Maturity and social skills should definitely be a factor. If your child is very mature for the age and the teacher thinks he/she has great social skills, then move them up. However, many kids in preschool NEED the socalization to succeed on kindergarten. It helps them learn different structure, schedules, and the way things work in school settings.

My son was tested at 3 on his IQ and he scored way beyond his years. But he has Aspergers and lacks social skills. He is way smarter than his classmates, but he may have to attend preschool for a whole other year to get his social skills caught up. He will need to be placed in gifted classes once he is older so he doesn't become bored.

Not only in preschool...but for the REST of their schooling...ALWAYS make sure that the child is in an environment that is mentally challenging (in a good way!) Also...when they are older...teach them to KINDLY assist other children with what they already know. However...if you keep a child with children (or classrooms) that do not help them to stretch what is already there...they WILL get bored and eventually tune out, shut down...give up. I know...it happened to me! (Of course I'm 47 and school was different then..) but I got so bored having to "stay with the rest of the class" that I turned into the class clown and eventually got so dang bored I just stopped being interested. Thank goodness for all the educationl channels on now...I soak up all the information like a VERY hungry sponge! I think it would be AMAZING to be a student now with all the teaching tools available. No matter the age...if your child is smart...enjoys learning...FEED THEM...let them lead you to how hungry they are! PAY ATTENTION!!!!

The environment should always be up to par with your child's levels of learning. If they are bored, behavioral issues tend to arise, as well as issues with motivation. Preschool often sets the stage for later learning and it's important to remember that.

Socialization is a big part of preschool. If your child is socializing well, that is a huge plus. I consider the social aspect of preschool the predominant need over academics at that age. Learning schedules, routines, and those sorts of things help in the development for later educational years.

Encourage the child to further their knowledge outside of the classroom. Once elementary school begins, they can be placed in an advance program to encourage learning at an excelerated rate.

You can let the kid become teacher's assistant. So, the smarter one can teach the rest of the kids. It is also another way for smarter one to learn.

If the child is bored out of their mind then you might want to try testing them to start kindergarten a year early. If they have a lot of friends then you might want to leave him/her in the class and leave them with their friends. All up to you!
