It is still the USA, and it has been ever since 1898 when American secret agents sank the USS Maine with a loss of life of over 250 US sailors, in order to justify starting a war with spent imperial force, Spain. The USA won, of course, and with that victory it annexed Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam.
