"LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Rescue workers freed seven illegal immigrants who became trapped after attempting to enter the United States from Mexico via a flooded storm drain, US media reported.

CNN and local television in Otay Mesa, near San Diego in southern California, reported that the immigrants were freed after becoming stuck in the drain.

Earlier, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Lauren Mack, said border patrol units had been alerted after hearing yelling from the trapped immigrants."

You do understand about storm drains? How they fill with water without warning?

You can't depend on weather reports when a college car wash can have the same impact.

What do you think?

judy - hadn't thought of that. They use so much water, it is probably pretty diluted, still, you could be right!

This is sad that so many look for a promise land and will do all sorts of things to find it. And achieve it. Despite knowing they are breaking the law.
Happiness is a path, not a destination. It is a shame that both Governments do not make this clear that they will not be rewarded for sneaking through anyway they can. I think this is horrible that a life is being risked for the want of more. And knowing if they are fortunate and lucky they might get it. Those who are not as fortunate might end all hopes forever-and that is a waste of life. And many feel they will be the lucky ones. It doesn't seem to bother some that some are not so lucky. Or both governments would do something to curb this.
I think it is sad and a waste of life.
I wonder "before they were rescued" were they thinking about dying and did they wished they had not began this journey and did they still feel it was worth it.

Guess it rained on their parade.

I think the real question should be what is driving people to take such risks. It has just begun. In Mexico’s last election a Marxist presidential candidate lost the presidential election by less than two percentage points. He has vowed to start a parallel government including a parallel army in Mexico. The blood shed is about to begin in Mexico and we here in America don’t even have a clue. When the shooting starts in Mexico it won’t be long before we have millions of refuges flooding over our borders—no fence will stop it.

I have seen previous stories of children living in storm drains, or were they suors in Mexico, and one where the families with children were cought crossing to the US through such places. I think they must be desperate to try to cross in such a dangerous way. That however has been true of crossings from East to West in Europe and many have lost their lives doing it . What is going on in Mexico that makes lives unbarable for the Mexicans ?

Perhaps the bigger question should be why are college car washes allowed to flush soapy, oily water directly into storm drains? Does nobody in the States realize that this is illegal as well?
