If you own a dog (or a cat), would you purchase a system to keep the pet contained in a specified area or a system to help find the pet when it gets lost or stolen?

I have my dog micro-chipped with Home Again just in case we should become separated.

If you are going to do a fence don't do the one that has a collar that shocks them. I watch my neighbors dogs run fast, get a small jolt and run through it. happens all the time then they are scared to go back in because they aren't in a hurry and try just walking through an keep getting zapped. Then they are stuck on the wrong side till he gets home. It happens often and he still uses it. Go figure. We have fun watching the idiot owner Come home walk over take the collars off his dogs so they go through and then get zapped as he walks through with them. We call him the idiot cause he does this routinely. His dogs are out more than in. The chip is a must just for emergency purposes but a real fence or you and a leash are the best answer.

They already have both. They are called
Invisible Fences and Microchips.
The fences use electricity in wires that send signals to special collars the pet wears and when the pet gets too close to the wire, the collar warns them with a beep then shocks them. They learn quick not to approach the little warning flags that come with the kit. Lots of people have them already.
Microchips are the size of a grain of rice and injected with a large bore needle under the skin of the pet's neck. It has a number that is associated with the pet owners account with the microchip company. Special sensors, that vets, rescues and shelters have read the number, you call the company and the pet owner is notified as to the location of the pet. Millions of pets have them.
Cheers.

I think that it's more important to keep your pet home. If you invest in a system to find your pet if he gets lost or stolen instead he might end up run over by a car or something. That is why I believe you should invest in keeping him from running away.

of course your pet should have id in case it gets lost and it should also be microchipped. if you dont have the money to put up a fence then you don't need to. if you do then id suggest you should because it makes excercising them a LOT easier. They get a lot more energy out by running vigorously for 10 min than a 30 min walk. so my general answer would be both but the ID stuff is more important

Radio beacons allow you to trace the pet but of course are expensive. They are also only as good as the collar and the battery.

Keeping a cat or dog confined is not really fair either and is really pretty cruel.

Cats are normally pretty wise and independant. IF you let a cat out it will over time learn where it lives and it's local surroundings. Dogs should never be let out alone.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I would prefer to prevent my pet from getting lost rather than deal with the heartache of trying to find it. Of course, the best loss prevention system is a leash!

i would say the confinement.

i would try to make sure that my animals never got loose. i leash walk both my kittens and my dog. they are not allowed outside without me. and i trained my dog to stay with me even when he's off his leash. i have a shih-tzu. we play ball at the school. he's very well trained. i have had him since he was five weeks old when his mother got sick and now he's ten years old.

the chip is only good if the animal can be scanned. if the animal gets away and someone else decided to keep it then your pretty screwed. or if someone stole it.

i would suggest training to be the best idea. a well trained dog is awesome. you can play ball and not worry about your dog taking off. i have always told everyone this. train, train, train. it really works!!!

good luck and have a good day.

For the yard. It may be too late... But you could buy both to be very safe. The dog might dig out so Id buy both. Or if you dont have enough money then buy the fence then the collar

If i were you I would invest in having my dog microchipped. Another thing you might think about doing is having your dog tattooed in his/her ear. You need to use numbers that you can remember (not your social security number - obviously). I wouldn't use the dog's registration number either if the dog is an AKC registered dog.
I would very definately fence my yard.

if you are talking about an invisible fence and the dog wears a collar. don't do it. have you ever seen a dog get zapped with it. its the most pitifully thing i have ever seen. do the micro chip and tags. and no i never did the invisible fence. when my dog's got out which was rare , i run them down. but i know people who did the invisible fence and i am telling you it's awful to watch. they say after a few times the dog won't get to close to it again. but in the mean time its pitiful.
