500 years ?? 2006 minus 1776 = 230 years of United States History... not 500 years.

A country has "Made War" on us when they either declare war, or the President decides that their actions require Congress to issue a declaration of war...

1812 - Britain "made" war by impressing US Citizens into service in their Navy... we went to war to stop it.

1917 - Germany sunk US flagged vessels... an act of war and we went to war to stop them.

1941 - Japan attacked the US fleet and US Territories, and THEN declared war against the US...we went to war to stop them.

1941 - Germany declared war against the United States. We went to war to stop them.

The United States has made a Declaration of War 11 times (World War II accounts for SIX of those Declarations) see link :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_war_by_the_United_States

I am sure I am missing a few, but the ones that come to mind immediately:

Japan
Germany. Twice, althought I am sure some people will debate that. However, Germany did engange in attacks against US shipping during both World Wars prior to the US commiting any military resources towards Germany.
In 1989, Manuel Noriega of Panama declared war against the US.

Your question indicates a 500 year history which would encompass a time period that predates the United States as an independant nation. If you want to look at pre-independant times, you could also include England and possibly France on that list.

I don't know if you would call it "made war" but if you remember what got us into WWII was Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. In my opinion, it is made war. Also, in my opinion, anytime a country attacks another it is an act of war.
