This sounds like depression to me. You need to see your doctor or therapist. If its a mild enough case of depression perhaps therapy is all you need. If its severe enough or doesn't respond to therapy you may need medication.
I've been on antidepressants for about 4 years. Before that I fought with depression on my own---and it was a dumb thing to do. I'd NEVER go back to my pre-medication days now after seeing what a world without depression is like.
What is silly is that I waited so long to seek help---I waited till I was 44 before I finally talked to my doctor about it. I put it off because I thought my doctor would think I was crazy! LOL!
She didn't think I was crazy--she gave me a couple of tests and I guess I either passed them, or flunked them with flying colors because she put me on antidepressants. I was on Effexor for about 3 years---and it worked wonders. Side effects got to be a little tedious, so I mentioned to my doc that I'd like to try something with less side effects. I'm on Lexapro now--depression is gone and two of the three main Effexor side effects are gone as well! woo hoo!
Don't put it off, Rachel. You deserve to be happy and there's nothing wrong with seeking help for depression.
Best of luck to you!

Depression is its own monster. Everyone has pain, for all different reason, and sometimes, without reason. Thing is, it hurts. Period. Seeing a therapist would be a good idea. You need to be honest with them though, otherwise they can't help you. Also, the sooner the better. Sometimes medication is vital to bringing you back up out of this dark mood. And a therapist can diagnose you. Then if you choose, you can study your disorder, learning about it always helps. Writing helps too....write like hell...and once you have found a therapist you can trust, you can bring in your writing and the 2 of you can work on it. THeres so much help out there now. If you dont have med insurance, look in your local tel book and check for places that work with people. Usually you can find low to no cost therapists. And its doesnt mean that they are not experienced or good! I wish you well on this journey. Remember 2 things. This too shall pass....and a quote I live by "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." Confucius. I wish you health, happiness, love, help, and above all HOPE. Jenn

There's a book called "The Lost Soul Companion" by Susan Brackney. It's just a small little paperback written by a woman who has been dealing with depression for a long time. She doesn't solve your problems or is some kind of miracle worker. She just lets you know that there's other people out there going through what you're going through. It really made me feel better reading it. She also created a lost soul companion website where you can talk to other lost souls, but try reading the book first.

Unless you have clinical depression, your only real help is self help. You have to focus on what is, and that no one has control over ,"what is". When you get depressed I'll bet you're thinking about things that might happen in the future. All fear is future based. Which means you're afraid of something that might happen in the future. What you need to focus on is, that the only reality is right now. 10 minutes ago, or 10 minutes from now, don't exist. One other thing. If you just have common depression, I must tell you that if you exercise for an hour everyday, it's all but impossible to get depressed.

Do you wake up depressed? Does something trigger these feelings? Do your moods changed suddenly without reason, for example your at a really a fun party and then you just feel like someone laid a ton of bricks on you. People who are depressed have a chemical imbalance in their brains it can be a deficiency of one of these chemicals norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. If you have true depression you will become depressed for no reason and as you said thoughts of death. I am not a doctor but my mother dealt with depression and it is not something to play around with it can and will ruin your life if you don't get help. So I suggest you go to your doctor and tell him you symptoms. Once your doctor diagnosis you he may put you on a anti-depressant. They will help but it is best that you are not dependant upon them. You have to find a way to beat it yourself and it always helps to let a parent, friend, or spouse know so you will have support and a person to talk to. Best of luck to you!

I am right there with you! I know what you are feeling and the only thing I do is to find something, just one little thing that makes me feel better about myself, and I do that. I get so bad sometimes that I try and think up ways of doing myself in. It is nice to know that I am not the only one though, so you made me feel better, and I hope you feel a little better also. Try and keep your nose above the water line and maybe next time you go to your doctor, talk to him/her about it. Print your question and show it to your doc. Don't be affraid, he/she has seen this before. Find a friend that will listen and I will bet he/she has a story for you that will make you feel that you are not alone.

Hey, it's okay. I felt that way for a long time, too--since childhood, even. I just thought it was a way of life for me, until I sucked it up, went to the doctor, and got on anti-depressants. I take Lexapro, and it's changed my whole life around. Now I'm happy! I won't say that you'll be skipping through fields of daisies or anything, but you also won't be torturing yourself with self-destructive thoughts. Please, please go to a doctor or a therapist or someone, and talk to them about your problems. It could very well be a chemical imbalance, and they'll put you on meds to help you. Good luck!

everybody gets these feelings once in a while. I enjoy playing sports which always makes me feel better. Or you could go to a library and find a good book. A counselor might also help. I went to one a few years ago. You just need to find someone you feel comfortable with. Good luck!

I think that many of us go through these kind of gloomy periods...my advice is to talk to someone. Let your friends know how youre feeling, call your mom or if you feel its necessary go talk to a therapist. The most important thing, I think, is not to keep yourself closed off from everyone else.
