Should the definitions of the words be known too? or is it just too much?

No...Spelling Bees are by its very name is about spelling.

If you want them to know definitions, maybe Word Bees?

I think it's a bit much to ask the kids for the actual definitions. They usually ask for definition and origin of a word to help them figure out the formation of the word (I think it's called morphology), hence making it easier for them to spell it out in their heads.

It would be a fantastic idea to have a "terminology bee" though...maybe you're onto something :)

too much yes.. or they would have to rename it the spelling definition and etymology bee, the idea is that based on rules and generalizations they should be bale to spell words they dont know the meanings of

no...if they want to have vocab bees then good...but dont get it mixed up with the spelling bees

the point is to see if the kids can spell, not how much they know.
