Go to a shelter and find a good cat. Spend time with them and make the right choice. That's the best thing to do, I think.

Ask yourself this question, How much time will I have to train and entertain a kitten? If you do get a kitten get two if possible. They entertain themselves, don't get as lonely. I just adopted two and was amazed how much work they are. I don't mind it, but was surprised.
Also, in the past, I adopted a 5yr old cat and just loved her. I was working full time then and didn't want to leave a kitten alone all day not being there to train and wondering if it hung itself while I was away. The older cat was trained and I didn't have to worry.
There are many older cats age 2 on up that are wonderful at the humane society and they can tell you the personality of each one.
I would advise just going to your humane society--I'll bet you will find just the right cat or kitten just by looking.

i had a hard time deciding this too. when i saw all the adult cats that no one wanted i felt so bad for them.
but i decided i wanted a kitten in the end. i could work on the training and get a kitten with a personality i liked versus a full grown cat that probably was abused and has its own personality already intact.
if i had more time to spend with an adult cat then i probably would have gotten one. but it was the kitten i finally decided on.
and then the next day after getting my new kitten from the shelter a friend brought me an abandoned 6 week old orange kitten that i decided needed some love. so now i have two kittens. lol.
good luck with your decision.

A cat from a shelter would be a nice choice. Most likely you would be saving its life because, as you said, more people are willing to adopt kittens than full grown cats. Any shelter will let you spend time with the cat before you take him/her so that you can be sure you get along. Some shelters will even let you return your cat and switch it for another one if you decide to. Not sure if they have one in your area but we have a CAPS (citizens for animal protection) shelter here that offers a two cats for the price of one deal. Good luck, and enjoy your new friend.

Many cats in shelters are NOT abused, they simply have been abandoned. Tons of adult cats are loving, sweet, gentle souls who will die unless someone has the heart to adopt one, unless they are one of the fortunate few in a no kill shelter.
Adult cats have already gone through the kitten crazies, are often spayed/neutered and often are very grateful.
Kittens are a blast, but many people will only adopt a kitten, and some times when these kittens are grown they wind up at the shelter looking for someone...like you.
Go with an adult.

I would say both. If that isn't an option then maybe a cat if you don't want a mess. Kittens are fun and playful but are very curious and will get into everything and make a mess. Older cats at first may do this since the surrounding is new but they tend to be more easy going and won't require much training.

Kitttens are more playful than cats. Mostly kittens are nicer than cas when adopting. the cats get upset about being adopted sometimes. If you live in a hick town like me.. you need to build or buy a place for it to stay or it might run away. usally cats will run away because they are depressed about getting adopted and the only way to solve this with cats is to buy another cat. If your getting a kitten then first you need to keep it inside then move it outside after it knows where it is. if I were you Id get a kitten. you can find them at PETS MART and at a local pound. I would get one from pets mart because the ones from the pound might bite or scrach.

It doesn't really matter whether you get a cat or a kitten. Just go to an animal shelter and find one you want without looking at the age. Just look at the cat not how old they are.

I would go for an older cat they never get adopted out. Whenever I have gone to get a new cat. I go to the local shelter and pick the one thats been there the longest as long as it has the type of personality that fits my lifestyle because you never want to take a cat back it is way too stressful and not to mention mean. Good Luck

I have 1 of each, The one I had from a kitten is a laid back male orange and white. The one I adopted as an adult is a beautiful somewhat neurotic calico. Both have their pros and cons. I agree that adopting an adult cat is better because as you say everyone gets the kitten. Adult cats are just as affectionate,
