It wouldn't say it hurts, I would say that it's a bit uncomfortable. The initial needle prick will cause a bit of anxiety you'll get over that quickly, but all in all its no big deal. The only thing that might get to you, is that you might end up feeling nauseous. They will have Orange Juice, cookies and stuff like that to help you stabilize quickly. They will only take a pint of blood and it'll be finished quickly.
Overall there is no great pain involved, and your doing a very good thing!

Well I am 17 and gave blood for the first time in September. I was also worried about the pain as I have quite a low pain threshold. But when I actually gave blood the small finger prick hurt me more than the needle going into my arm! I can honestly say that I didn't know the needle was in until the nurse told me!

usually it's painless, and you can aid in making it painless by just relaxing.. I'm a phlebotomist and I'm here to tell you that sometimes it does hurt, maybe they nick a nerve (nothing can be done about that) or maybe there's a little scar tissue, or maybe you jump and it doesn't go in smooth.. also sometimes they forget to let the alcohol dry all the way and it can burn a little... but USUALLY everything goes smooth and it's over before you knew it started. I've been stuck a thousand times and the only time it's EVER hurt me was back in my phlebotomy class when the girl thought my tendon was the vein lol.... oh bad memories..... but these people are trained professionals with many many sticks behind them.. so relax, you have nothing to worry about.. and if it does sting a little it won't be too bad and will all be over quickly. they usually take a pint of blood from you.

RE:
How bad does it hurt to give blood?
I am giving blood soon and I am really scared to do it, and I want to honestly know how much they take and how much it hurts.

I hurts when they put the needle in. It hurts a little after the needle is in, but not enough for me to tell you not to give blood. The will give you a rubber ball to squeez, do it. It makes the blood come out faster. Also, they aren't kidding when they say to eat breakfast that morning. I had a friend who passed out because he didn't. If you are giving blood later that day, don't skip lunch, you do need food in your system. Other than that, you are good to go.

Please calm down, they barely hurt at all. Techs who take blood are very practiced and sometimes you don't even feel the initial prick. I do not look when the stick me or while they are drawing the blood. So sometimes I don't even know when they ar through. I find the band they put around your arm before they take your blood the most uncomfortable thing about the whole process.

They usually take about a pint. It doesn't hurt that much. You'll get a cookie and some juice afterward. Don't go drinking after or you'll get smashed after 1-2 drinks.
