In the wild, wolves and other predators will wallow in another animal's scent to cover up their own during the hunt. Say a wolf is hunting a deer and catches himself upwind of the prey; the deer will smell him right away and know he's coming. If he smells like a squirrel or opossum, the deer won't take off. Your cute lil bichon is calling up a vestige of his wild ancestry...

Dogs will roll in anything whether it stinks or smells like flowers to rid their own bodies of their scent. It is a trait left from wolves. They also circle before lying down another trait from their ancestor the wolf

Some dogs are just crazy. Why don't you put the fish in a bag and throw it in the dustbin ?

My dogs do this same thing. However, our backyard is pretty heavily wooded and they do it around dead birds. I have never been able to figure it out. I just take them back in and bathe.

Dogs do this especially with seafood because the scent is very strong and they are trying to eliminate their own scent...this is very normal...just discard the fish.
