Let's pretend you're going to have a dozen Iraq/Afghanistan war vets coming over for a nice homecooked meal, and you really want to put out a great spread....(yes, you've got the space, a workable kitchen, a decent budget, and you CAN cook!). You're thinking about wonderful yummy dishes.....the sorts of things that you THINK they've probably been dreaming about eating for the past year or so...

What would you serve---entrees and side dishes? (This question is primarily for foodie people who like to play with ideas and don't mind doing a lot of "work" for a couple of points.)

Come play with me on this!

defiantly meat and potatoes. can go a few ways with this depending upon what you feel like. steak and baked potatoes go a long way. then again its hard to beat a good pot roast. shepards pies are good and fulfill the m&p aspects. then again you could do up some fried chicken and corn on the cob, that would allow them to get down to eating with their hands and just grub out.

for side dishes you probably want to dish up some nice white trash casserole, string beans with cream of mushroom soup and nuts (slivered almonds or maybe chopped cashews). if you do baked potatoes then have plenty of options for fillings, from real bacon bits to plenty of shredded cheese. if doing mashed then maybe dress it up a bit with some extra flavors depending upon your style (chicken stock rather than milk, or some grated parm and roasted garlic).

cooking is such an organic experiance, just stick with what you know well and enjoy and it will come out in the taste.

I'm sure that they would LOVE to have a "thanksgiving dinner".......even if it wasn't thanksgiving. Turkey, Mashed potatoes, gravy, , green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, stuffing, cranberries, and some homemade cheesy garlic biscuits.
