If your pre-schooler is under 4, I would not recommend the LeapFrog L-max, lots of reading/ math/ phonics there which is better for age 5+. There is a younger system made by Leappad but my daughter never really liked it (and she is an avid reader).

My daughter from age 3 to now (almost 6) really liked the Learn Thru Music system. It is neat too because we travel a lot and it lights up so she can use it in the car at night. I also highly recommend the Jumpstart software if you have a computer and your child can use it. Also any software made by Humungous. LeapFrog makes a lot of good non-game system products for learning too, including the alphabet system that sticks to your fridge and the alphabet music box.

For the systems that have been out awhile, you can check Ebay or Craigslist for some good deals. For some really great learning games, check out this website (cool craft ideas too):

We are doing the Allowance Game right now which is great.

I know this isn't a game system, but I bought the leap pad book thing for my girls and they love it even 4 years later. At first it was just something to play around with, but now that they are older and they are reading, they read with it. I think it's great - they don't sit in front of the television with it, like a lot of the other toys - which was important to me.

There is this really great series of CD-ROMs called JumpStart. They have one for each level, JumpStart Toddler, Pre-K, Advanced Pre-K, 1st Grade, etc. Very educational and has lots of cute characters that do the game play with the child (the games are all educational).

the best learning system is called : reading books, made up silly songs, stories, games with rules made up by the kids, play-dough, going outside to play, going on a walk to see what is going on outside, looking at clouds. Kids will learn more from this than any store-bought game that teaches kids that there is only one answer to a problem.
