One question is what makes you think that you have a cavity (caries)? Cavities can differ greatly in size, from tiny pin point holes in the grooves of the teeth to giant gaping holes that trap food! Usually they are darker in color, from brown or black to a faint shadow that can be seen under the enamel surface.
As for that; the usual signs of cavities are:
1) Sensitivity to cold/hot (more so cold) and sweets that does not linger - usually just as long as the cold is on the tooth
2) An obvious hole in the tooth!!
3) A dark shadow that can be seen through the tooth enamel (however this could just be an amalgam filling showing through as well)
3) Staining in the grooves of the teeth - however, staining does not always equal cavities (caries)
Basically, you cannot tell yourself if you have a cavity; unless it is painfully obvious! That is why you need to see your dentist regularly (at least twice a year). If you think you have one, go and get it checked out. Your dentist can check it with and instrument to see if it is "sticky" (which happens when the enamel starts to break down) and also take a radiograph (x-ray) which will confirm whether or not you have a cavity.

They are very similar to tooth decay which are pretty much black areas where the cavity has infected the tooth. Both can be cause aches. Size varies since it will be bigger if you let it get big by just putting up with it for a long time. A dentist will be able to detemine which is which and the necessary solution.

Hey man! I've never had a cavity either, but my younger brother has had quite a few, so I know what they look like. They are tiny hole(sometimes not even visible by the naked eye). They will usually appear to be dark because you are looking at a hole.

Do you have a hole in your tooth, or is it turning dark (brown, grey or black)?
If so, you have a cavity. They come in different sizes, and the longer you let them go, the more they grow.

You can't see a cavity, you need to see a dentist if you think you got one, they can take x-rays and use a probe to see it you have one.
