Teeth do NOT heal from fractures. You would need to have it crowned to protect it. If the fracture is all the way through to the root, it really needs to be pulled.
See another dentist.

Are you sure, this is what your dentist told you?? Teeth do not repair themselves like other parts of your body do. If the crown portion is fractured and salvageable, your dentist should have suggested a crown (cap). If it is fractured down the length of the root, most likely the tooth will need to be extracted. Often if a tooth is fractured deep within the bone, it might be stable for a long period of time, however it will never actually "heal". Also, at some point you might start getting bone loss around it. I'm sure that sounds OK to you and figure that then you can extract it somewhere down the line if the bone loss gets too bad; however, if you lose too much bone around it, it may make it very difficult to restore the area later on (especially if you are planning on getting an implant). My suggestion, is that you may want to get a second opinion!

Fractured teeth do not heal. If the fracture is maybe 3-5 mm from the end of the root tip, it might form a fibrous scar and then be "okay" with no further treatment. If the fracture is nearer the edge of the bone, you are going to lose the tooth. Sorry.

What kinda of dentist did you see? Obviously not a good one. No your teeth don't heal ever. It sounds like you need a crown. If it's all the way down to the nerve then a root canal. I'm not no dentist but I do know that teeth don't heal themselves.

Why wouldn't your dentist tell you how long it would take?
I didn't know something like that was possible.

teeth are not like hair or fingernails. Once damaged, unless replaced, I donot believe there is a miracle to recover it.
