Thanks, Adam T.
Also, the word "inanimate" came into being when we knew much less than we know now. Is the universe really inanimate? Is a photon inanimate? Is an atom inanimate? Is a virus inanimate?
Another good read is "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" by Julian Jaynes.

What property of an inanimate universe could cause a soul to exist? Leading edge science 50 years ago did not know what the tonsils were for, so they removed them. Hundreds of years ago, we did not know what gravity was or understand curves over long distances, so we said the earth was flat. Just because we do not understand something now, does not mean we should turn to silly myths, and superstitions. We don't know what could be in other dimensions, so should we just say it is flying pink gnomes that take socks from laundry, because it would make us feel more secure to pretend we know? NO, NO. We should look for the truth in a logical manner, and exclude childhood fairy tails (ex: the soul, god)

Nope. And check out the modern work in neural network theory. Consciousness is an emergent behavior of the brain, nothing more, nothing less. You need the whole thing for full consciousness.
Being that I've had near death experiences myself, and out of body experiences... I wonder just what it is you find so hard to comprehend about them? When you see the changes to the brain that happen during these experiences, they make perfect sense.

The brain acts like a conduit for consciousness - consciousness comes from the most fundamental realm of reality which is pure abstraction. Watch What The Bleep Do We Know - it might help.
