I use to have all kinds of antivirus and antispyware programs....and I was getting hit all the time. Then, I purchased McAfee Security Center with Antivirus, antispyware, firewall, antispam and more. I think the newest package is called Security Suite. Regardless, nothing offensive has gotten through in one year. Also, about 6 weeks ago, McAfee (free of charge) upgraded the entire system into the latest and most awesome protection, automatically....they uninstalled the previous software and installed a different system ...even the logo is different. Anyway, they are the best company. The tech support is excellent. I can't rave enough. They have made my life totally protected securitywise. Now, if only XPSP2 and Dell computerswere half as good products. They suck. I had used both free programs and expensive ones. McAfee is very inexpensive also. It is the best consumer entity out there. Nothing has gotten through...so far, not one virus or malware, etc. My scans and logs are totally clean. Try it.

The best way to protect your computer doesn't require any software. Just follow two simple rules:

1. Don't download software from untrusted sources. Only download it from reputable companies or open source providers (e.g. Microsoft, Intuit, Firefox, etc).

2. Open e-mail attachments only from people you know. Don't open e-mail attachments on "chain mail" that gets forwarded from one person to another.

Anti-virus software is expensive, and doesn't work well. The less software you install, the better off you'll be. Install only the software you need to do what you want to do.

Try the Microsoft live scan (free) once every month or more. It sorts out everything and can be found on the Microsoft site. You can subscribe to an automatic service but the scan online is free. Windows defender is also quite good. AVG anti virus is free and very good with free updates, along with clamwin anti virus. Norton/Symantec anti virus and general maintenance programs are good but more pricey. Hope this helps!

Norton System Works - great suite of utilities to help keep the computer clean and operational past its lifecycle.

It costs approximately $70 from Best Buy, but usually there is a rebate that kind of negates the cost.

It's a great utility!

As far as browsers I'd go with Firefox, it is one of the most secure browser you can find and they continually refine it to make browsing safer.

For antivirus - MacAfee, Symantec, ClamXav (linux,Mac)
Firewalls are coming more into use, but don't have any preference right now.
Spyware - Lavasoft is a good resource.
