Some will tell you it was "all about WMDs". But Congress itself passed a resolution in October 2002 in which it LISTED the reasons (in 22 "whereras" paragraphs), and there was much more than that involved. So if you want their list, all you have to do is read through the "Joint Resolution to authorize the use of United States Armed Forces against Iraq" (October 11, 2002)
(see at http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/middle_east/july-dec02/joint_resolution_10-11-02.html )

Below I've clipped a lot of the exact language of this resolution, esp. to show the many parts that are NOT about WMDS (and even that the WMD-part is often misunderstood or misrepresented).

First, I'll summarize the gist of them:

1) brutal repression of his own people (including the use of WMDs against them... gassing the Kurds)

2) failure to comply with the 1991 ceasefire and numerous U.N. resolutions in the following years

3) attacks on U.S. citizens -- including shooting at U.S. planes simply enforcing the U.N. resolutions --and attempting to assasinate a U.S. President (G.H.W. Bush)

4) harboring and otherwise supporting to terrorist groups (including but not limited to Al-Qaeda), involved [Saddam even paid money to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers]

5) deliberately & repeatedly thwarting the efforts of weapons inspectors [so that, if he did NOT have WMDs, he made it impossible for that to be verified, as the ceasefire and many other resolutions required]

6) the stated policy of the U.S. government (beginning with the Clinton Administration) to seek to remove the 'current Iraqi regime'

Note that, whatever WMD capabilites Iraq had in 1992 (or whatever mistakes intelligence agencies all over the world may have made about thiese capabilities), the evidence for the charges in the list above is very strong, in many cases, beyond any question.

From the text of the resolution:

* Iraq's War Of Aggression against and Illegal Occupation Of Kuwait. . . to enforce United Nations Security Council resolutions relating to Iraq

* After the liberation of Kuwait in 1991, Iraq entered into a United Nations sponsored cease-fire agreement pursuant to which Iraq unequivocally agreed, among other things, to eliminate its nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons programs and the means to deliver and develop them, and to end its support for international terrorism

* Whereas the efforts of international weapons inspectors, United States intelligence agencies, and Iraqi defectors led to the discovery that Iraq had large stockpiles of chemical weapons and a large scale biological weapons program, and that Iraq had an advanced nuclear weapons development program that was much closer to producing a nuclear weapon than intelligence reporting had previously indicated;

* Direct and flagrant violation of the cease-fire, attempted to thwart the efforts of weapons inspectors

* Iraq persists in violating resolution of the United Nations Security Council by continuing to engage in brutal repression of its civilian population thereby threatening international peace and security in the region, by refusing to release, repatriate, or account for non-Iraqi citizens wrongfully detained by Iraq, including an American serviceman, and by failing to return property wrongfully seized by Iraq from Kuwait

* Current Iraqi regime has demonstrated its capability and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction against other nations and its own people

* Current Iraqi regime has demonstrated its continuing hostility toward, and willingness to attack, the United States, including by attempting in 1993 to assassinate former president bush and by firing on many thousands of occasions on United States and coalition armed forces engaged in enforcing the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council

* Members of Al Qaida. . . are known to be in Iraq

* Iraq continues to aid and harbor other international terrorist organizations, including organizations that threaten the lives and safety of United States citizens

* United Nations Security Council Resolution 678 (1990) authorizes the use of all necessary means to enforce United Nations Security Council Resolution 660 (1990) and subsequent relevant resolutions and to compel Iraq to cease certain activities that threaten international peace and security, including the development of weapons of mass destruction and refusal or obstruction of United Nations weapons inspections in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 687 (1991), repression of its civilian population in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 688 (1991), and threatening its neighbors or United Nations operations in Iraq in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 949 (1994)

* Iraq Liberation Act Of 1998 (Public Law 105-338) expressed the sense of congress that it should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove from power the current iraqi regime and promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime;

* To take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on september 11, 2001, or harbored such persons or organizations

The answers you get from this question depend upon which monkey you are talking to.

Two monkeys were sitting on a branch when a snake came along with two bananas. the monkeys said, "What do you have there?" The snake said "These are bananas and they are good for you, they taste great and are very healthy. Would you like to try one?" One monkey grabbed a banana rapidly skinned it and took two big bites and swallowed the banana. The other monkey took a banana and slowly pealed it, sniffed it, felt it, then took a small nip and tasted it and spit it out. "Whew" he said, "This tastes awful"

The first monkey had finished his banana by the time that the second monkey had rejected his. The first monkey started to get sick , rolled over and died. The second monkey yelled at the snake, "What have you done? Why did you give him a poisoned fruit./"

The snake said, " I need to eat and I like monkey flesh but I cannot move fast enough to catch one. I knew that one of you would be foolish enough to believe everything I said and I would then have something to eat.?

Today, the news media ( and local politicians) have millions of foolish monkeys ready to grab and swallow everything they say without quietly testing it and checking it out. Whichever monkey you are determines whether or not you are foolish enough to believe everything you hear.

Oil, Money , Greed for Oil....anyone with sense will tell you that the Iraq war was fought for the reasons far from what the US gov. gave its people (WMD anybody still remember that...) It was actually because Saddam denied to be an ally (rather servant) of the US...As you can see War is the biggest business in todays world...Iraqis still do not fell protected (why should they after more than 40,000 civilians were killed in Iraq after the intervention) some protection that is...

No real reason for the Iraq war. Iraq did not do 9-11. ( How many Iraqi people were on those planes?) We have lost almost 3,000 troops in Iraq and all for lies. all I can say is "Vietnam!! Here we go again".

Saddam killed thousands of innocent people...making others live if fear for there life everyday. He aided terroists...he's gone now...with that being said, the state of Iraq today we can't just up and leave them...USA is the greatest power in the world...It's our job to take care of the ones that can't take care of themselves...or just need some help getting on their feet.
I do wish that our troops could come home...one death is one too many....however they are doing their jobs...when they enlisted they KNEW that something like(deploying to Iraq) this could/or would happen. My husband is going to be deploying to Iraq soon for the 3rd time...my brother for the 2nd....i hate it but i also know that this is their job

Saddam Hussein was a dictator that had to be taken down. Now that he's gone, you have three seperate groups of Iraqis who don't trust each other in the first place and most of all outsiders. The Sunnis want Saddam back because he was one of them and they had it real good under him.
The Kurds want to unite with Kurds in Turkey to establish their own state, but do you really beleive Turkey is going to give up land to allow this?
Then you have the Shiites who don't trust either of them and want to make sure Saddam stays out permenantly. If our troops left now, there would be a civil war that would tear the Middle East apart. And WE would really feel it at the gas pump.

We were told we went into Iraq to stop them from using weapons of mass destruction. Now we know that Iraq didn't have any after the Gulf War.

They were aiding world terrorism....That's the only real reason I can think of that has been presented and proven. Beside the fact that Saddam had become a crazy man. I am sure there are more.

I don't know all of the reasons but I do know that our husbands, fathers and brothers are fighting this war to keep their fellow comrades alive. Keep them in your hearts even if you don't agree with the reasons...whatever they may be!

The Iraq war.
Why did it start?
The war was started under the premise that Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction. Now we know that was a lie, and as a result of the Downing Street Papers, we also know that both Bush and Blair knew it was a lie.
So there are two crimes to start with.
The real reason for going to war in Iraq is that it was instructed by the powers that be that run the world, and control most of the governments, and the UN.
They are called by several names, such as The Illuminati, New World Order, Fourth Reich, The Elite, Bunderburgers, Zionists, and Globalists.
They consist of a small number of very rich and very powerful families, who have an agenda to control the entire planet, dispose of over half the people, and enslave the remainder.
They are the ones who provide instructions to government, and any president or prime minister who does not comply with these instructions ends up like JFK.

Through the secret service departments, which they also control, they create various false-flag terrorist events, in an effort to justify war. 9/11 is such a case.

What is the current situation?
The current situation is disastrous for both sides, as is the usual case in war.
The coalition forces, mainly American are suffering high losses, with no end to the war in sight.
The Iraqis are suffering incredibly high losses of civilians and those defending their country, both from direct fighting, and from the horrors of depleted uranium. which causes radiation similar to nuclear weapons.
As a result of many Iraqis being disfigured for life, and in incredible pain, then they are easily persuaded to take their own life, and to take out invading forces with them. This is why there is such an increase in suicide bombers - they have no hope of a reasonable life, and are soon to die anyway.
The depleted uranium is blowing all over the world, and has been recorded as far away as London. This is causing the cases of cancer to escalate world wide.

Far too many reasons and excuses to cover on a website such as this. Why don't you go to a library and research this or even go to Google for some information. Be aware that the politicizing, opinionating, biasing will be there and it will really be hard to discover. Don't read a Democratic or Republican website. For pity sake, don't read the half baked rantings from some hollywood hack or so-called star.
