He is 4 years old and will use the toilet to pee but he simply refuses to poop in it. His parents (my uncle and aunt) don't seem to be having much luck and not for lack of trying. They've tried bribes, having him sit there, and removing toys when he dosen't. As I've said before he will pee in the toilet so we know he's no afraid of it but at 4 he should be getting close to using it regulary I'd think.

He hasn't been using dipers for over 6 months, probably close to a year.

If he's had one painful poop, he's probably afraid they're ALL going to hurt. Or, maybe he fell in or got splashed and it scared him. Kids his age - if they have one bad experience, they put it off for as long as they can because they don't want to repeat it.
Try establishing a routine for him - such as going right after breakfast and before bed - even if he doesn't have to yet, he will. Otherwise, if they've been painful, put him in a warm tub with 2 oz of baking soda in it, give him some tub toys and let him play for 30 mins. He'll either get out and go or go in the tub - in which case, get out the Clorox. =)

The reason he doesn't is because his parents didn't wait until he was truly ready to be potty trained and they probably put underpants rather than diapers on him thinking that since he could pee on the toilet it was time to do so. They were wrong.

I know a lot of boys who were not potty trained at four, including my son. Unfortunately, he probably won't do it until he is really ready. Patience is the best advise.

Is he still in diapers? If so, it is now time to remove the diapers. Believe me, after pooing several times in his pants he will use the toilet.

Pop that asss when he poops anywhere BUT the toilet and he will get the message.
