I'm getting a miniature beagle this weekend and he will be 6 1/2 weeks old when I get him. (Yes I know that is young to be leaving his mother but apparently the breeder thinks its okay so I'm going with it). I've decided to try crate training but I work during the day 7:45am-4:15pm. I would come home at 11:30 for lunch and let him eat and out to potty but my concern is if he would be able to hold it for 4 hours at such a young age. Should I keep him in the crate during this time with a towel in it to potty on or keep him in my bathroom with puppy pads on the floor? My concern with keeping him in the bathroom is that he would go on the floor and I want to train him to not do that. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

A puppy will go whenever he needs too, like any baby. Chances are he will avoid do this where he sleeps. Lots of paper, time & patience. Know that accidents are going to happen but in time he will learn.

No way he will be able to hold it for four hours at this age. Keeping him confined to the bathroom is the best thing for now. Put the crate in the room, though, so he can get used to sleeping in it. Just keep the crate door open so he can eliminate outside of it. Yes, he will go on the floor; however, if you reinforce him for going outside and don't reinforce for going on the floor, and crate him when it's appropriate, he will learn.

BTW, I don't believe there is such a thing as a miniature Beagle. If the breeder told you this is what the pup is, and is sending him home at this young age, I would question his/her ethics and seriously reconsider taking this pup.

Wow that is such a young age for it to leave . They learn so much from being with their litter mates. Not only that but you work all day. I t will be very hard for puppy to learn to hold it that long. Sorry I sound so negative but I am working on puppy training myself. The crate is a good way to go. It is working good. If your crate is large enough you could put a puddle pad at one end or paper, to help with accidents. This would avoid the pup from wetting his sleep area.........................good luck

A puppy can only hold his pee for 1 hour per month of age..Crating him at that age could cause kidney disease, or have him soiling his kennel..which will become a lifelong habit.. He will also eat his poo to keep his kennel clean..also a lifelong habit..

you have pinpointed the concern: you at the instant are not there while she pees. the least confusing element to do is a million) continuously save her on your sight by using tethering her to you with a leash and/or 2) Crating her once you are able to not supervise her. At 12 weeks, she's an extremely youthful domestic dog and sure to bypass frequently. Your interest is to assist her outdoors once you will discover the indications and/or crate her while it is not possible to supervise her. additionally, i could sell off the domestic dog pads. save your requirement black and white. Black is each and every of the incorrect behaviors (peeing interior, peeing on the domestic dog pads, etc.) and white (peeing/pooping outdoors purely) is the desirable habit. in case you are able to save your standards very sparkling and straightforward, your domestic dog would be taught lots extra at as quickly as.

if the create is big enough try putting a litter tray in with a piece of turf in it and if he has to go at least he'll get used to going on grass, don't use a towel, that will only teach him it's ok to go on any clothing thats available
