Yup....four times....but in the US we call it hospitalized....
Helped me quickly get out of my manic episodes...
There are different wards for different problems....like one for depressed and bipolar, another ward for pyschotics, another ward for elderly, etc.....So everyone in my ward was either depressed or feeling really great!
Not so bad.....but I was happy to get out

Being institutionalised means being programmed in a very narrow setting to do as others want you to do. So we all are; in families; schools; colleges; workplaces; churches; clubs we join; activities we do etc etc. The only issue is choice, which in many things we don't get because we need to eat etc. So perhaps the question should be 'have you ever been truly free? wa sit by choice or against your will?'.

I never have been, but my neighbor was once. She supposedly drank some bleach and was screaming her head off at her husband and herself (she is schizophrenic). The police took her away on a stretcher, kicking and screaming the entire time. They took her to an institution, but she came back about a week later. Her visit there obviously didn't help, because she acted the same as she always did (pulling her hair out, chanting in some made-up language, screaming at herself, not bathing/brushing her hair or teeth, etc.).
