I believe that electrical engineers have a broader range of job opportunities than civil engineers. However, as an electronics engineer, I am probably a bit biased!! I also understand and know the various opportunities that are available to me as an electronics engineer and I may not be aware of the various categories of jobs available to civil engineers.

Electrical engineers can find themselves working on circuit design (analog, digital, or both), software or firmware programming, antenna design, communication systems design, control system design, power distribution and systems, motor and generator design, etc... In my mind, civil engineers work on large scale structures....they design buildings, bridges, roads, and tunnels...and that is about all. These are very useful things, designed and built on a large scale, but I do not see the variety of opportunities in civil that I see in electrical.

As a mechanical engineer specializing in internal combustion engines, I have found my opportunities limited to a few geographical areas. I think that civil engineers may have the most freedom of where to live and work, but the choices of the type of work may be greater for an electrical engineer.
