Here's the situation. I am going to Spain for a study abroad program this spring. A student visa costs $100, is good for six months, and does not allow me to work. On the other hand, I am dual citizen, which would allow me to purchase a $200 UK passport that would last for 10 years. The question here is whether or not the British passport conveys any additional benefits that would be worth the $100 difference in price (plus, the symbolic fact that I, an American, would be statistically recorded as a Brit). Is it easier for someone with a UK passport to get work in Europe than someone with a US passport? Please help me figure out what the pros and cons are for each option. Thank you!

Ugh, how the heck did I put "a" and not "I"??? My apologies, everyone.

Get a UK passport. You are a UK citizen and therefore a European Union citizen. Spain must recognize you as such (they lost a case on that issue, involving an Italian-Argentinian citizen, Micheletti, in the early 1990s)

Don't try to go to Spain with a US passport. In the end you will have more hassle and more expense than paying for the UK passport.

Life will probably be easier for you in the EU with a British passport - especially if you wish to work. In addition, most of the world is not quite as upset with the Brits as they are with Americans, so you have an added security advantage with the red passport. The only benefit you will be losing is access to assistance, if needed, from the US State Department at its embassies and consulates abroad.

your definitely better off with a british passport than a visa anywhere in europe, there less paper work, you dont have to wait in the long lines at the airport and travel in europe is much easier.plus you get it for 10 years; so if you ever go back youll have it.
