I look over to my neighbors the other day and the kids were in the backyard burning something. They were young children so I went next door and asked if they knew what they were doing. They said yes. They were burning a Bible. Apparently she was taught to do that to old, messed up, falling apart Bibles. I was totally shocked! I did not know what to think. I feel that is horrible to burn a Bible. Has anyone ever heard of burning a old, messed up Bible? If so, let me know and what is the reason behind that? I am trying to do some research.

Chances are that giving it to a Church would just result in the same thing--burning it. It is very expensive to restore old books and half the time they can not be restored so yes, burning it is acceptable. In the Catholic Church when Holy things are burned because they are no longer needed (the year before's palms) or they are no longer good Scapulars etc. they are used for the ashes to put in the peoples heads for ash Wednesday. I am talking about just Blessed items. This is much more preferred than throwing it in the garbage. The smoke is to rise to God as a sweet incense.

I have never in my life heard of burning a bible, but it may be acceptable. I'm 30 years old and have every bible ever given to me. The oldest one was given to me in kindergarten and it's pages are a little turned up, but I still treasure it. My grandmother's bible was passed down to me after she went to heaven and it's very old looking, but still usable. I keep it on my book shelf for memories. I've only taken it down to look at it a couple of times and read some verses she marked as important. Not sure what I would do if a bible got so tore it needed to be disposed of. I thought you were suppose to take extra care of a bible so it never got that way.

it was probably out of respect...like you are supposed to do with a flag that is all torn apart.....but to be honest, i don't think i could do it!!!

We had a fire in our house one time, and from where they say the fire started on the other side of the wall was a book shelf and we had one of those big fancy Bibles on it. Well the house was completely burned out except for the words of the Bible. The cover, index, and everything but the Bible itsself was burned. I was only in 2nd grade and will remember that for the rest of my life!!!!!

And? It's only a book, papers with print.....
(It isn't the book that is Holy.)
The children shouldn't be burning anything though, and that should be your concern.
The Bible is a beautiful book. It's contents are full of meaning, and it is a guideline on how to live your life. I can see how it might upset you, but in all honesty, it's just one of >>>many<<< reprinted copies of one of the >>>many<<< versions of the Bible. It is replaceable, and I think I would prefer to burn it, rather than trash it. Ashes to Ashes.... Of course I also prefer cremation, so, maybe that plays a part in my opinion.

I think she fell asleep during high school civics class and confused the Bible with the American flag. Let me ask you this...do the kids also stand up whenever a Bible passes by in front of them.

I was told to bring a Bible that was falling apart and couldn't be repaired to the local church, and they take care of the disposal.Maybe that was what the leader of their church told them was the proper way to dispose of the book.

It's possible that they may feel they are treating it with respect. Burning may (to them) seem a less degrading way to dispose of a (to them) holy object than simply throwing it in the garbage.

Some people feel the same way about their tarot cards.

I'd have to say burning a religious book is a better solution than throwing it in the trash. It is still a book & prone to nasty parasites, no offense intended.

Jesus who died on the cross to take away OUR sins
