Here's what I do. (And I have the same problem) I put a rubberband on my arm and when I feel like falling asleep, I snap it. It works, but you have to do it A LOT. That's just what I do though.
Hope it helps!

Learning "tricks" to stay away is only a bandaid. You need to determine why you're not getting the sleep you need. It is just because you work or stay out with friends late? If so, you may need to alter that schedule so that it doesn't effect your studies. Or, do you have actually problems staying and falling asleep? Exercise, change in diet, and other things could help with this. I went through a period where I wouldn't sleep for 24-36 hours at a time, go to school, and then crash for an entire day. Not good for my grades or my health.
As a temp fix while you figure out what the underlying problem is, I recommend making sure you keep your blood sugar up. Eat decent sized meals and have snacks if you need to. It doesn't have to be sugar or caffeine laden to keep you up. Exercising also keeps you alert.

Would you be able to get more sleep in a night?
I find that when im tired i tend to drift off and find teachers asking me questions but luckly i know the answers and if i dont i get out of it anyway!
If in lesson i start to drift off from what the teacher is saying i look around and notice that im in a classroom environment and think to myself that i need to be paying attention or i will get told off and not be able to follow the work.

Don't skip breakfast! Try to get at least 8 hours sleep. You may want to talk to a doctor, since there are pills on the market safe enough for teenagers with sleep disorders.

P.S. Did you know an apple can wake you up as much as coffee?

Wear a hat that shades your eyes! (hubby did it when he was going to school because he worked and was going to school full time) Seriously though, maybe taking a cool shower in the am before you go, or try different techniques going to sleep, such as warm milk, or try some herbs from a drug store that might help. Good luck!
