You never stated where you live at the moment nor where you're going which does make a great difference, believe it or not.
However, the answer is most definitely - YES, letters of invitation for a tourist visa do really work and for some consular departments in certain embassies are a must (i.e. the United States or the United Kingdom- it's nearly impossible to get a visa without a letter of invitation)
Of course, this does not mean that you don't need all the other paperwork such as: a birth certificate, airline (or other transportation) reservations, insurance, school information AND THE VISA APPLICATION FORM (which you can go and get at the embassy or print out from the webpage – always make a couple of copies since MISTAKES on the form are NOT ALLOWED) etc. You can not make a visa request with only a letter of invitation. It also depends if you’re underage or not (documentation differs)
The validity and importance of the letter of invitation does depend on who wrote it i.e. their status in the country, annual income, profession, tax accountability etc. Make sure to tell your friends to include an estimated amount of money they will be supporting you with (the more -the better BUT it has to be a realistic amount, in accordance with their personal revenue). Also, check with the embassy if they accept faxed letters (with three copies!) or do they demand an original (in this case, your friends need to send the ORIGINAL letter by mail - DHL, FedEx etc).
In any case, a letter of invitation is always a plus, never a minus. (Be ready to answer questions about the people who sent you the letter- your relationship with them, when you saw them last, how you know them etc).
Go to the website of the embassy in question FOR YOUR COUNTRY and click on the option for The Consular Department. Go through the list of necessary paperwork, checking whether you have everything you need. You can also make a phone call but this tends to be messy and confusing.
The point is - it isn't a matter of belief, it's a matter of fact. In any case, having the letter of invitation betters your chances of getting a visa a lot.

If you don't have a letter of invitation, it may decrease your chances, but if you do have a letter, it will not increase your chances.
Why do you keep saying you are "pretending" to go for your birthday? Do you think you have to lie to get a visa? You may lie your way right out of a visa.

Yes they are legitimate. Most countries request them to ensure that one can adequately support oneself while visiting. Some persons purchase plane tickets and have absolutely no funds for accommodations and expenses. It is also used to curtail illegal migration.
