You have nine golf balls with one slightly heavier than the other eight. Using an old style scales and with only two goes figure out which one is the heavier.

To Ildjb - You can't use your hands. The ball is only slightly heavier and you wouldn't be able to tell. Try again.

okay, you put three balls on either side of the scale, and leave three out. If the scale is balanced, then get the three you left out, if it is nott balanced, then get the heavier three. The, with the three you've got, put one on either side of the scale, and leave one out. If the scale is balanced, then it is the ball you left out. If the scale is unbalanced, then the heavier one is the one that ways mor on the scale. Maybe this diagram will help explain:

OOO l OOO OOO

O l O O

Okay dont think that helped, but it works anyway.
Cheers.

Only two tries, huh?
1 ) 4 on each side of scale, one sits out. If scale balances, left over is heavier.
2) If scale doesn't balance, then take heavier side and put 2 balls on each side. Heavier is one of the 2 on the heavier side now.
Now that you know one of 2 is heavier than the rest, use your hands and figure out which is heavier, since you can't use scale again

Though your question is incomplete and should hve been ended 'by using three times the balance how would you isolate the hevier ball" , I would like to answer the question:
First: Keep 4 balls in each pan - If both the pans are balanced then the remaining one is the heavier.
Second : If one of the Pan is heavier take those four balls and keep 2 in each pan.
Third : Take the balls from heavier pan again and keep individual ball in each pan to get the heavier ball.
Balls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
