i did have my son staying at the house to look after things.he had food and clean water etc

He did that out of stress over you being gone. No worries, they will grow back but I would watch to make sure the plucking doesnt continue.
There isnt anything you can do for him now.

that he is stressed cos you left him on his own. budgies are very sociable birds. if you leave a radio on when you arent around it will help him. it may help to put his food on the floor of the cage for a while as he may have problems balancing.
maybe you should call your local vet and see if they can offer any more advice, it will only cost the phone call

4 days is a long time , your bird has been stressed out, the feathers should grow back, i do hope someone was going in to check the birds seed and water.

its streessed out get it a friend next time you go on holiday leave it with a friend or neghbor
