Jack Daniels is my brand, I can tell it from any other whiskey, so yes to me there is a big difference. A good bar tender knows better.

Jack Daniels is NOT a bourbon whiskey, whereas Jim Beam IS a bourbon, and here's why:

To be a bourbon whiskey, a spirit must be:
1) aged for a minimum of 2 years in new charred oak barrels
2) be made of 51% corn mash
3) be distilled in Kentucky

Jim Beam follows all these regulations and can be called a bourbon.

Jack Daniels is a Tennessee whiskey. Jack follows all the same rules to be called a bourbon but for these 2 reasosn it is not a bourbon:
1) it is not distilled in Kentucky
2) after aging, they do a final charcoal filtration which mellows the whiskey.

Therefore, if you asked at a bar for a bourbon, and they gave you Jack Daniels, that bartender is an idiot.

Jack Daniels is alot better than Jim Beam. Jack Daniels has a stronger lasting taste and you should drink it straight up or on the rocks. Jim Beam is the type of bourbon that should be mixed with cola or given to a friend.

Jim Beam is Bourbon, and Jack Daniels is Whiskey.

Completely different. Although alot of places seem to swirve to that drink if they haven't got Jack Daniels, don't know why they do that as it is no where near as nice JD, and doesn't really taste the same either.

But to answer your question exactly. if you want Bourbon, they should not serve you JD.

Both are a type of whiskey, aged differently. Jim Beam is a tad bit sweeter than Jack Daniels. Both are very good.

If I got served Jack when I asked for burboun I'd send it back.

Jack Daniel's and Jim Beam are both whiskies.
Jim Beam is a Kentucky Bourbon.

Jack Daniel's is a Tennessee Whiskey.
http://www.jackdaniels.com/

They start out the same in that the ingredients have to be >51% corn...

From http://www.greatbourbon.com/proof.html :
"Bourbon whiskey is legally considered a “distinctive product of the United States,” and no other country has the authority to call their whiskey products Bourbon. Even though Bourbon can be produced anywhere, for a Bourbon to be classified as Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, it must have been distilled and aged in Kentucky for a period of at least one year and then continue to be aged for at least one additional year."

"Federal regulations require that Bourbon whiskey be made from a minimum of 51 percent corn. Other grains used may be rye, wheat and barley malt in any combination. By law, Bourbon must be distilled at no higher than 160 proof (vodka and neutral spirits are distilled at 190 proof) and aged in new, charred American white oak barrels at not more than 125 proof. Also, no colorings or flavorings can be added. Only distilled water may be added to the Bourbon before bottling, to achieve the proper bottling proof, which must be at least 80 proof. "

Jack Daniel's adds an extra step, the charcoal mellowing or "Lincoln County Process" before it's aged. Therefore it cannot be legally called "Bourbon" but rather "Tennessee Whiskey."

Don't let the "sour mash" term fool you, most, if not all Bourbons start out as sour mashes...it's a standard procedure.

Jack Daniels is a sour mash whiskey, Jim Beam is a bourbon. Only a very bad bartender would substitute one for the other.

Jim Beam has a strange taste that is not found in any other bourbon, thankfully. I would love to be served JD instead of other speed-rack brands anytime.
