It all depends on who wants it. Supply and demand. If a bunch of people really want the pen and there's only one of them, then it could be worth that to them because that's the amount they're willing to spend. Collectibles really don't make a lot of sense to me because it all depends on who wants it and why. If you don't think the pen is "worth" $250 it isn't (to you) because you would never pay $250 for the pen. If the people who wanted this pen so badly realized that it really wasn't worth paying that much, they'd all go out and by BICs and it wouldn't be worth it anymore and you'd be able to pick it up for a quarter.

Yikes, sounds like a economics question....

It might "cost" $250 because it contains a lot of precious metals, or it's loaded with diamonds or other fine stones. It might be completely handmade by artisans, carry a 99-year-guarantee against virtually every possible defect imaginable, or be part of an extremely limited "edition" (if it's rare or uncommon, the value goes up).

I guess you could say that it's "worth" $250 ONLY if someone feels that they're willing to pay that sort of price for the pen in question! If they want the "status" of such a brand-name item, or its incredible quality, or its rareness, or whatever....and they're willing to fork out the bucks for it, it's "worth" that much....

But if there's no buyers around at that price?---Value it at $250 till the cows come home, honey, but if you can't move the merchandise, it's **worth** exactly....nothing.....

It depends on many factors.

The pen could be handcrafted from solid gold, or other precious metals. It could be set with precious or semi-precious jewels/stones, or it could be something ancient, like a fully intact quill pen.

It could also be a collector's item, one of a kind, and collectors who are adamant about having such things will pay that kind of money to get their hands on such a rare item - like the pen used to sign the Declaration of Independance or the Constitution of the United States of America for instance... Collectors would pay anything they could "afford" and in some instances more than they can afford for a National Treasure.

Your question really doesn't offer much to go on - is there a specific pen in question? What are the specifics?

Well, in the instance of, say, a Montblanc, it is partly the detailed construction, hand crafting, etc. But it is also the name - Montblanc, Waterman, like Rolex - is a watch really worth $5,000?

Ultimately the worth of anything is what someone will pay for it. If no one would pay that much for a pen, the price would come down.

Are you crazy i have seen pens that cost up to 30,000 and more. They are called Monte Blancs. They are recognized by the star at the top or cap of the pen. You can occasionally see them in movies, watch for them when rich people or lawyers are writing something.
