If, after all the above answers, you still are open to sense, click on "Rational Spirituality" on the Dhaxem website, and draw your own conclusions.
The important thing, however is, that what happens with a Soul after the death of the body depends on the Soul, on its choices, and its level of advancement. In some cases, indeed, the worms just eat one.
Seeing that you search for deeper answers in life, I presume that you are a Soul on a structured path. In that case I feel that "Rational Spirituality" may help you answer a lot of the information that you seek.

I would like to think that we are embodied spirits and whatever happens to the spirit after death is questionable. I believe the spirit lives on and is united with the force of the universe in a way that is unknowable until it happens. I know that this is all subjective, but my life is more meaningful, and what the heck? Since nobody really knows, I prefer to believe that anything is possible.

Your heart stops beating. Your synapses slow their firing until you are brain dead and no electrical current is flowing through the nervous system. Your body will generally expel any waste matter (air, urine, feces) being held. Sometime around this time, you will either discover that there is an afterlife of some sort, or you will blink into nothingness, with absolutely no consciousness to be aware of the fact that there is no afterlife. The body will begin the approach to rigor mortise. And bacteria will begin decomposing the body. Years and years later, only ash (and perhaps fossilized bones) will be left of your body. If there is an afterlife, you will never be able to tell anyone. If there isn't, you will never be able to tell anyone. Those who say they know the truth about the afterlife, either way, are not intellectually honest. Which is why this question will continue to evoke philosophical debate ad infinitum.

So far I see no answers suggesting what for me is the most logical and most reasonable plausible explanation......reincarnation. This is a massive subject tied in with Karma theory and I have not time to do justice to it here. Please search on terms like reincarnation and Karma.
For those who argue against reincarnation, saying it is not in the Bible research the early Christian beliefs later edited out of the bible. Also think about how Christ said John the Baptist was the prophet Elija reborn.

God told Adam he would die after commiting the first sin. He told him that dust he was and to dust he would return. Death then is the opposite of life. 1 Corinthians 15; 26 calls it mankinds last enemy that will soon be brought to nothing. This link has an excellent article on the subject. http://www.watchtower.org/e/20050815/article_01.htm

I think that after our death we are put in a state of limbo awaiting the second coming of Christ. After Christ's return and victory at the battle of Armageddon is the White Throne Judgement. This is where we have to account for our lives. If our names are not found in the book of life then we are cast into the lake of fire. By being saved your name will appear in the book of life. You are then judged for your works of your life. This has no bearing on your salvation, just your rewards or lack of rewards once in heaven. After this judgement . . . on to heaven.

death is the end of this life. You rot into dust, but ppl can't swallow that harsh reality, so religion has been invented to help ppl cope. Simple
