This past year he has started getting very grouchy and snaps if I go for his ears. Other than that he is still a very loving guy.

Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for him.
Dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed, up to 1 tablespoon for a large breed. So, a Basset would be in between..Mix it in a little canned food, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's, and give about 30 minutes before he needs to relax. It will keep him happy, but reduce stress. It can be given as needed.

I use it for nail clipping, and ear cleaning, etc..
This recommendation was given to me by my vet, many years ago, and it never lets me down...
You will find chamomile in your grocer's tea section..

Bassets are known for ear infections, ear hygeine is a very integaral part of good grooming for the overall health and well being of a dog. he should be and feel accustomed to having his ears touched and cleaned, His ears hurt, that is why he is not willing to co operate. You may require to hold his mouth gently enough so you will not get bit, or muzzle. Vetlink is a wonderful product for cleansing a dogs ears. You just squirt a small amount into opening of his ear canal, he will of course shake his head, which then automatically distributes itself, into the dogs ears. You may then wrap some gauze around your index finger and gently wipe to remove the waxy-brown or rust colored infection that is eminating from his ears. We humans can also get grouchy when we are in pain. I am otherwise certain that your dog is is good ole' guy. droopy ears are always far more prone to infections as opposed to pointed upright ears. Do keep on top of the situation, once healed, do give him regular cleanses in ordr to prevent future infections.

Your dog is in your 'pack'. He must learn it is not acceptable to snap at you. You must assert authority and let him know you are the boss. If he is snapping because it hurts him (maybe his age means turining his neck is painful etc) then find another way to administer the treatment. You could try putting the drops in a small plastic syringe and squirting the liquid in without the need to turn his head. Check with your vet before changing treatment methods. You may find you can dilute the drops slightly to make squirting it easier. Again, check with your vet FIRST.

try wrapping a thick blanket around the dog and put the drops in and GENTLY message the base of the ear...if this doesn't work, take him to a Vet and let the Techs do it, it's one of the things they're trained to do...if you can't get the drops in it's doing the dog no good and the infection will only get worse

Try and show him pictures of bad ear infections. Plus Web MD should have more information on ear infections that could change his mind.

reassure your pet that you not going to hurt him or her. try having someone help you and give him or her a favorite treat while the other is putting the drops in his or her ear. and when you are done make sure that you praise you pet very good.

12 12 months olds, while it is composed of being annoying, have been properly-known to stay longer than the final lifespan of a tortoise. Get earplugs and take in ingesting excessively. till now you recognize it, he would be 40 and not considered one of those soreness in the a**. :)
