An Akita.

2006-10-10 06:33:02 · answer #1 · answered by Demon Doll 6 · 2 2

My choices would be a Chow or an Akita, of the larger breeds. I would never bring any other large breed into my home. I do not feel safe around a Doberman, Rottweiler, German Shepherd because they are well known for having potentially violent dispositions and I would never want any children of mine to be around them. I have seen firsthand many of those that turned on the same people they were supposed to protect.

Also, I am somewhat biased as I was a victim as a kid of a violent Doberman bite, while minding my own business no less, that the doctors were amazed that I survived. Yet the dog was believed the entire time to be the most well-mannered and 'would never do such a thing, ever'. In this day and age, that dog would have been put down immediately. Back then, that was unheard of.

Any dog that barks at anyone coming to your home, and who continues to bark/growl until you give the command that it's okay for that person to enter. A friendly dog will simply lick them all over and go home with them if they give it even a bit of a chance! Please don't teach the dog to be mean, however. You want it to love your baby and protect it, and the best way to do that is to love the dog and praise it so it knows any positive attention it pays to the baby is what you want it to do. A large dog would be preferable (the police will tell you that is all the protection you will need), such as a German Shepherd, an Australian blue sheepdog, etc. I would suggest that you not purchase a dog but, rather, get one that is mixed breed through a newspaper ad, your local humane society or the pound. Then be sure you have it neutered/spayed so it can enjoy a long and healthy life. The mixed-breed dogs don't have the health problems a purebred will probably have (from in-breeding) and they need homes. Also, if your home is large enough (and has a fenced backyard) you might consider the large dog having a companion of his/her own...a smaller dog - and again not a purebred. Enjoy!

You don't want a big or mean dog,but something that can scare or detour a burglar. A beagle not very imitating but the barks can scare people away and it would do well with babies. If you want a big dog go with a yellow or black Labrador retriever ( I have one and he scares people but he would never hurt anyone). But with any dog you have to worry about getting along with the baby, and it may compete for attention with the baby (it does happen). Good choice getting a dog I had mine when I was a child and I would never of hoped for a better dog. Good luck finding a dog and with the baby!

I would say wait a few years until the child is three or four, but if you really want a good dog for the baby and will protect if needed...I dont know its name but ever see 'The Hills Have Eyes?' Now thats a great protector dog!

We have a white German Shepperd. He is good with our kids. I do home daycare and I have five daycare kids.. ranging from 6 months old to 10 years old. I have never had a problem with him being mean to the kids. He is about 10 months old, when we first got him he was just eight weeks old. He jumped a lot and we had to work with him to keep him from jumping and knocking the kids over. Whatever dog you decide to get just make sure that you stay close by and supervise. Also, we had a blue heeler and it was a bad idea. Those dogs are for herding cattle.. and they nip at anything that runs past.. and small kids run fast.. so unless you want you child nipped at then I would stay away from those dogs. Good luck.. just do a lot of research on the breed and ask around.

The answer depends on how ready you are to include a dog in your family. For instance if you live in a home with a large yard then you can consider a large breed, but if you live in a small home, or an apartment, then you really should consider a mid to small size breed. Even a small dog can be protective of it's home in so much as they serve as a warning to it's family when something is wrong, and many people fear dogs regardless of their size, in that a barking dog will cause an intruder to fear being bit or that the inhabitants of the home are being alerted to his/her presence. In any case the Labrador Retriever is an excellent choice because dispite their size they are a very well adjusted family dog whose size is intimidating dispite their gentle nature, and they can be instinctively protective. Especially female labs. Please be considerate of your pet's space and excercise needs. Good luck.

A Beagle is the best all around dog you can have.

German Sheppard's are good.

Collies are great with kids.

Just keep in mine that you don't want to get a dog that is unstable and decides that the baby has to go. (Jealously or hungry) For a baby dog, you MUST see the dog's parents and see what type of personality they have and how they act around people. DO NOT get an older dog that may have already formed his habits with the previous owner. He might have some hate built up inside him. IF and WHEN you get a PUPPY, watch the puppy around the baby. Even puppies can get rough in playing.

Black Labs are unpredictable.
Rocks are unpredictable.
Pit Bulls are unpredictable.
Dobermans are unpredictable.

Good luck. Pops

Quite honestly a pit bull is my personal opinion. I have a 1yr 1 month old pit bull that is the biggest pansy i've ever owned. i've had 4 german shepards, 3 labradors, and a number of mutts. My pit bull, Casey is honestly the best dog i've owned. Many people are quick to say they are the meanest dogs and should never be around people, but it's all in how you raise the animal. There are more attacks by german shepards, labs, and even the little dogs than there are with pit bulls. people just seem to want to give these dogs bad names and only publicize the very few vicious ones. Oh well. People are quick to judge. just my opinion

who ever said akitas arent good with kids is sorely mistaken, traditionally these dogs were bred as war dogs and also protectors of children, often be left alone with the children to "babysit" as it were. there are really so many great dog breeds out there that can be both a baby friendly and protector, although as far as i know akitas are the only dogs bred specifically for this purpose. be careful of a puppy of any breed around a baby as they are excitable and will scratch and nip, also any dog can be made to be good or bad depending on how you train it,as well as like humans there all going to have somewhat different temperments, although i will tell you that german shepards and black labs tend to get pretty darn surly in there later yrs.
