you have picked a great family pet. they are often call the gentle giant.they do how ever have a shorter life span than other dogs because of their size. they tend to have health problems. you may want to talk with a breeder. they can tell you more about the breed!! i be leave their life span is like 10-15 years, but may be less!! never had one myself, but always wanted one. hope i helped some. lots of luck!!

Sorry, I would never own a Great Dane. They require lots of work and time and they are a huge animal. You have a new baby and he or she will require your time. With a small one a toddler you will have problems with the Dane running over him and pushing him around. Maybe even hurting your child not meaning too.

One of the most agressive dogs I have run across was a Dane. It was sneaky, territorial, and the size of a small horse. It bit my lab and threw her into the area. It tried to kill her.

Check into the breed before you get one. Yes, they are protective but they will demand your time. If you still get one make sure it is a tiny puppy and socialize often with baby. Make sure they dog does training with toddler or you wil have a bad problem if the child is lower in the pack than the dog. Dogs live by pack order.

Have the child first. The child needs to be established first I would say at least a year or two. Or you may have nothing but problems.

Great Danes are sweet dogs and make great family pets. It would be fine to bring a pup into your home maybe shortly before the baby arrives as they will "grow up" together. The only catch is when your baby becomes a toddler and your Dane will be of substantial size. If your pup turns out to not be incredibly gentle, you will likely deal with him knocking the toddler on his butt more than once. In no way aggressive, just so big they sometimes don't realize their own strength.

If you get the pup before the baby, be sure to bring home a blanket from the hospital before mom and baby come home for the pup to smell. We did this with our dogs to get them used to the baby's scent before bringing him home.
