I am doing a patriots pen essay and the topic is what are todays citizens and i need to know what a citizen really is in the eyes of other Americans

A citizen of the US follows the laws, pays taxes, votes, drives, and otherwise contributes to society. A citizen of the US does not leach off of society.

I am an American citizen...my husband is a British citizen working on getting his American citizenship...
In our eyes...the only difference between my "status" and his "status": I can vote. He works, pays taxes, has a SS number, and does everything else like a US citizen...but can't vote

A citizen do the following:
-Patriotic to the US as a country,
-Respects the flag and law,
-Works diligently and pay taxes, and
-Supports the government's policies.

A citizen can vote, get a drivers lisc. a passport, and can file for any and all benefits that legal citizens have earned, such as Social Security, Medicare, etc. You might want to go to www.uscis.gov and take a look there.
