Yes, a dog can break it's tail. When this happens you have to be careful that there is full circulation. If the tail goes cold, it needs to be amputated.
Definately a visit to the vet is in order either way.

A dog with a broken tail is akin to a broken arm or leg. There are bones in the tail and they can break. In really bad breaks, amputation or partial amputation of the tail might be required.

Yes, when I was a child we had a dog whose tail got accidentally shut in a sliding glass door.
That poor dog's tail was permanently crooked. It actually drooped at the point where it was broken.
