Some children just mature later. Was she premature or have any health issues? I would not say the parents are doing anything wrong, the baby picks up language from everything around, so unless they keep the baby locked in a bed room so that she has no interaction with people there is not much they could be doing to slow down her development. If they are concerned they should talk to there doctor, they do offer speech therapy for young children if there is a problem, there also is a medical problem with the attatchment of the toung that the baby could have that could be another reason for not being able to understand any of the babble.

Vocabulary develops at different ages for different children. Her parents are most likely not doing anything wrong, but she is simply still working on her speech development. If she can understand what you are saying, can follow directions, and has developed a way to express her needs (pointing, grunting, etc) then she will develop her speech when she is ready. If the parents have asked for your help, you might suggest that she be read to a lot, speak to her with as little baby talk as possible, see if she knows what you are saying ( ex. ask her, "Where is daddy?" Can she point to him or look at him? When playing say, "Please hand me the block." Can she do it? If so, she understands language fine), sing songs with her, and talk with her as much as you can. She should have a 2 year old well child check-up and her pediatrician will assess her speech development at that time

Some children are slow to learn to talk - my grandson is over 2 and he says very few words that I can understand - so her parents are not doing anything wrong - they are just letting the child be herself!@

I know the solution to this problem, read to this child. Read to this child EVERY day, let this child get excited about going to the library and picking out new books to read. Books for her age are simple concepts that she can understand and make sure the words are pronounced properly and clearly. Read each book as many times as you can because repitition helps them learn.
Please, get this child lots of books and make sure they are read to her every day.
My daughter is not even 15 months yet and she can say over 30 words, and she understands and mimics many more than that. Language is not just verbal.

First of all, have them get her hearing checked!
My son ended up not being able to hear for the first almost 11 mo of his life, needed tubes, & ended up very delayed with his speech.
Next, have full conversations with the child. I know it sounds odd, but give her time to respond, even if she doesn't say anything. This will teach her how to communicate with another person.
lastly, sing... a lot. Rhythm I found helps with speech

I'm not a mom but i do have a 2 year old niece, she talks a lot but i think how she developed her speech is by talking to her a lot, not the normal baby goo goo gah gah, but speak to her like you are speaking to her mother, pretend she understands, i think that may help. my niece was almost two and understood everything u told her. But remember everyone is different, she will pick up soon.

You have no problem, the parents aren't doing anything wrong. Kids will talk / speak when they are ready. If you want to speed up the process...so to say...read to her alot.

some kids just start talking later than others. when my friend's daughter turned 2, she wasn't saying much more than your neice, but 6 months later she was talking non-stop, and you would have never known she started late. as long as your neice understands when you speak to her, you don't need to worry yet.

She is not even two yet. Some kids take longer to develop different skills. I would give it more time...and I wouldn't assume the parents are doing anything wrong.
