In Mexico, "not having a grandmother" is being a shameless person, or having no conscience.

For example:
Juan: "Pedro no tiene abuela. Sale con mujeres nomás para bajarles lana".
("Pedro has no shame. He dates women just to take money from them").

There is an even more common expression used for the same purpose: "No tiene madre". (Doesn't have a mother).

" no tiene abuela" literally means it has no grandma,
that phrase is the light way of saying "no tiene madre (mother)", in Mexico we use both in different ways...

Esa película no tiene abuela
that movie is really cool...

Ese carro no tiene abuela
that car is amazing..

George no tiene madre (or abuela)
it means George does not care about anything, he does or doesn't do things (comments, actions, attitudes...) without thinking in others...

George no tuvo abuela
literally it means george had no grandma.

in other context, it means that George did something stupid/bad/ funny/ silly/ something amazing, etc...

In Spain it's like 'blowing your own trumpet'. According to the Spanish, Grandmother is the person to say how great you are, you shouldn't do so yourself.
