I love my dog to death he's so lovable and has a very playful personality. The only thing is he barks at every little thing. Mostly the neighbors dog, and when he sees people walking. How can I get him to stop barking??? I was looking in the store and saw the collars that I guess give them a little shock everytime they bark....... sounds kinda mean does it work and is it safe??

A good training technique that worked for me is to carry treats when walking your dog. When he starts barking, start feeding him the treats. Make sure it is something he really likes. Every time he barks, just feed him the treats and praise him until you are past what he was barking at. Pretty soon when he sees other dogs, people, etc., he will automatically look to you for treats and praise instead of barking. I know it sounds funny, but it works!

I have also heard of the collars that emit a high pitch sound that only the dog can hear. My sister used one on her dog. The only disadvantage, was if another dog in range barks, it will also go off for her dogs collar. But I imagine the sound is better than the shock none the less.

Shock collars are an awful torture and shouldn't be used ever, for any reason (source: my trainer). However, some bark collars emit ultrasounds that are disturbing to dogs, no physical pain and not electric shock. Those must be quite safe, I don't know if they work. I would try a collar on me first to see how painful or humane it is (not on my neck, on my arm though). If it is not suitable to be tried by you (ask the seller), don't use it on your dog.

I feel those collars are very cruel. Put yourself in your dogs position and you probably won't get one for him. I wouldn't do it! I don't know if you are inside your house when he is barking or walking him. If you are inside, we just roll up a newspaper loosely and smack it on our hand or their rear end. It doesn't hurt, the noise the paper makes scares them more than anything. It worked for my dogs.

Dogs love to communicate, some more than others.Just know that if you decide to use a shock collar your dog could develop behavioral problems, become aggressive and what if he gets wet? I think that it is cruel and unnecessary. If you want help, go to a dog trainer and ask them for help.

I have seen dogs that respond well to them and I have seen dogs ignore them completly. I would invite your friends to walk past your dogs yard carring a spray bottle full of water. When the dog barks, have your friends spray him with it.

no they should be banned, they can cause scarring and some dogs can become intollerant to them, i even knew one dog who used to wear one who ended up screaming instead cause it didnt set it off, never heard her bark since just this awful scream even when she didnt wear it! you can get other ones called aboistop which are a spray collar which is filled with citronella smell which dogs tend to dislike.
