I work at a pet store and we recently discovered that one of our parakeets has no toes. He sits at the bottom of the cage alone. He can not reach the food or water so we also put some down at the bottom of the cage. I have decided to adopt him, but what should I do for him? I want to get him a little ramp and a platform so he can be uptop with my keet Cricket. Any ideas?

My Budgie has one toe missing she is adorable. She feeds of my hand and has a great personality. She loves watching my lovebirds for entertainment. Missing Toes is a form of deformity. Look after her for me what you can do is give her a varied diet one veg and one fruit a day and what about a multi vit supplement it is really good to her healthy and it helps her fight infections quickly put it in the water or food daily. What about natural branches for her? I have included a web site of tree branches that are safe for your birds.

Get him a cage that's wider than it is tall. If the bottom of the cage is a grate, cover it with newspapers or towels so it's flat and your bird's leg won't go through it. Put food and water in shallow dishes that he can reach over without climbing up. You can make platforms for him out of boxes and use cardboard to make ramps up to the platforms. I also suggest you do NOT clip his wings, so he can still have mobility by other methods, and also so if he falls off of something he doesn't injure himself as much.

Also, get an appointment at an avian vet within a week or two of adopting him. The vet can check out if the missing toes are related to any other health problems, and can give you more ideas on how to best take care of your new bird.

I’ve seen dozens… or possibly hundreds of various birds with no feet or missing toes. They can get along with life perfectly fine if you provide a couple things for them.

For starters, you want to be sure to place a towel over the bottom of his cage. Make sure the towel is in good shape with no holes and trim any loose threads off of it. Thread can get tangled in the bird’s feet, or around its legs. The softness of a towel will also ensure that he doesn’t wear down the “stub” on his legs as much as he would on a harder surface.

You can either buy or make ramps in your cage. You can also make steps for him out of wooden blocks. If you use any type of wire for a ramp, be sure the holes would allow his legs to pass freely through without getting stuck; holes that are too small may allow him to pass his leg through without being able to pull it out.

Keep his food bowls low for him to be sure he can reach them without climbing.

Offer him lots of toys that he can swing/hang from. If you see him having trouble reaching something or getting around, simply adjust the placement a bit. Just like people, a toeless, or even footless bird can adjust to life very well!

As cruel as it sounds, the parent (s) probably bit the toes off. The ramp is what I would have suggested. So what if he has no toes? Who cares? He will still be a great pet, so long as you love him and take proper care of him.

When I was little, my family had a green parakeet and he had one clubbed foot. It didn't slow him down too much, but with both feet clubbed, I don't know! Poor birdie! The best of luck to you. It's great that you are adopting him!
