Complementary colors are colors that are on opposite ends of the color wheel. In painting and drawing, the main complementary color pairs are red/green, blue/orange, and yellow/violet. When it comes to the color of light, as in when you are color balancing in color photography, the complementary colors are different - red/cyan, green/magenta, and blue/yellow.
When complementary colors are mixed, they create a neutral grey or brown. To "grey out" a color, one would mix a small amount of a color's complement in, and the color is dulled significantly.
When complementary colors are used together in a piece of art, the effect is vibrant and generally aesthetically pleasing.
I could expound forever on color theory, but it's something that one can take years to fully understand. I have a B.F.A. and I'm nowhere near a master of color theory - I still learn new things with every work of art I create.

complimentary colors are the colors you get for free at a promotion.
Complementary colors are the colors which if you mix result in a shade of grey (white on the computer screen, additive color mixing, black or gray on your palette, subtractive color mixing). See wikipedia link provided for more detail.
Complementary colors are called like that because they complement each other (you can get the complementary color to one of the three primary colors by mixing the other two primary colors)
