The ones who do this actually believe they are doing good. They don't stop to think about what their words can do to anyone else. I'm sure that most of us take it as it means nothing, but on the same hand I'm sure there are others who come here who have been hurt by the words of those "christians". They are unaware that it's not just your actions that can hurt people your words can too. I guess it's a truth that has some how escaped them.
But to fair it's an ailment that most of mankind suffers from.

Let's not generalize... i know I've been guilty in the past of making blanket statements, but it's time to change that. I wouldn't say that "most" Christians are hostile and mean... in fact i know plenty in the real world that are some of the most passive people i can think of. Here on R&S however only the ones who are most into their specific brand of religion come out which is why so many of them can seem hostile, especially when everyone is here professing what they believe to be truth.

There is enough beligerence from all sides in this forum, we should all work to understand one another and not take some of the questions that my be seem to be a put down but are poised to make us think, or to help the asker understand a certain point of view. Open minds are the most helpful in these situations.

There is hostility and anger in everyone. It's not fair to say that most Christians are mean...you should say that most people are mean and hostile.
Yes, there are a few denominations who see themselves as 100% right, and anyone who doesn't believe like they do are going to hell. I do not see things that way. I am first of all nondenominational, I take the good from all denominations and leave the bad. However, the good MUST be backed with scriptural evidence. I don't follow one denomination because there is misleading in them all...and the subject you are hitting on is one that I am trying to keep from.
There is one denomination in particular that I would see this sort of reaction from, but, I don't want to name names, other wise I am no better than that.
But, please, trust me...not all Christians are like that. As someone else already answered, it may just be your views on what they are saying.
Does what they say scare you? That you might be wrong, and be headed for something you would rather not want to think about? And therefore you see them as being mean, or are they literally out there beating someone down with their words for no purpose?
I don't know, and I guess that is something you will have to figure out for yourself.

Most of them don't want to open themselves up to everything and explore things in order to find out the truth. Most of the christians think that Christianity and Logic are two completely different things which is why the west has created Theology. Its true that lots of things mentioned in the Bible don't make sense when considered logically. People have the opinion that religion cannot be explained by logic.

On the other hand, there is not a single statement in the Qur'an which contradicts logic. This is not my claim, this is the claim of a scientist named Morris Bucaille. He has written a book titled "The Bible, The Quran, and Science" and has given several lectures related to this topic. He says that he hasn't found even ONE thing in the Qur'an which contradicts science. He is a french physician who learned Arabic in order to study Qur'an in detail so that he could evaluate it scientifically.

Because you are an atheist, you should be able to defend all your claims. I challenge you to read the books by Dr. Jeffrey Lang, a born catholic who turned atheist and then became a muslim. He is a Ph.D in Mathematics and teaches at the University of Kansas. His books will surely make you think about the path you are treading. In one of these books he asks the reader to think like an atheist when they read the book so his arguments are apparent to them.

Following are the titles:

1. Struggling to Surrender
2. Even Angels Ask
3. Losing My Religion: A Call For Help

So I hope that being an atheist, you will surely want to take up this challenge and I will see how you get out of it :-)

I could ask the same thing about a few atheists on this site. I have seen very little hostile and mean Christians (with the exception of a handfull).

Where do you get we are mean. Your last question you asked you was trying to prove God isn't real, but you failed to prove that. Prove to me George Washington was the first president. You can't cause all books was written by men. All books we have are written by men so does that mean we should trust them. Some wheres along the line we have to. So why not challenge the men who wrote books on George Washington. Prove to me God isn't real, and we will even leave the bible out of it since you said it was written by men.

For some reason, a lot of churches breed feelings of self-righteousness, which in turn create socially hostile and mean people.

They live daily with the danger that someone might burst their faith bubble. So instead of examining a question with an open mind and heart, let alone with intellectual and creative thinking processes, they shoot slings and arrows from the lip.
