Because multi millionares who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars need a vacation home every once in a while. They commit a worse crime and get less punishment.

Because in some areas, those that think prison should be a vacation (usually liberals) prevail, so the prisoners in those areas are treated to free cable, free gyms, free internet, and whole world of other things that law-abiding people just do without if they cannot afford them.
Then in some areas, smarter people prevail and prison is actually a punishment for what the criminals did, so they get only the necessities. (They still get free food, clothing and medical/dental care though.)

There are different types of prisons in the US based upon the nature of the crime. For example..Hard serious criminals for murder shoud not be housed with less serious offenders such as possession of marajuana. Serious offenders referred to as felons are kept seperate because they are looking at much more time in prison. A murderer will face life in prison where someone with a minor offense will face only months to 2 yrs. in most states. That is why the classify the crimes as felons and misdimeanors..or less serious crimes. Also socially it would be wrong to put a less serious offender in a situation that would be more dangerous to him and it would be
defeating the purpose to house them in a prison with serious offenders where he will learn the ways or more serious criminals. Its like the difference in High School and College. There is better chances to rehabilitate the less serious offender where the chances of rehabilitating the hard core felon is very unlikely. We also have prisons for Federal crimes and state crimes. The Federal prison houses prisoners who violate federal law against the government of the US .. or crime on a federal property such as the capital or an Indian reservation or even a federal park. Burning a federal park is a federal offense. Burning your local city park would be a state offense which would put you in state prison vs. Federal prison. I hope this has helped.

What is the difference between jail and prison?
According to a definition used by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics in its report, Prison and Jail Inmates at Midyear, jails are locally-operated correctional facilities that confine persons before or after adjudication. Inmates sentenced to jail usually have a sentence of 1 year or less. (This can vary by state.) Jails also incarcerate persons in a variety of other categories, such as persons being held pending arraignment, trial, conviction, or sentencing; those who have been returned to custody following violation of the terms of their release on probation or parole; and persons being transferred to the custody of other criminal justice/correctional authorities.
Prisons are operated by either a state or the federal government, and they confine only those individuals who have been sentenced to 1 year or more of incarceration. Generally, persons sentenced to prison have been convicted of a felony offense.

There are different types of criminals, so there has to be different prisons to accomodate each type. There are maximum-security prisons for the murderers, drug dealers, and rapists, and then there are minimum-security prisons for criminals with minor offenses, such as drunk drivers or robbers.

Because there are 50 different states, each with their own system. And each state is made up of a number of counties that each have their own jail systems. Larger cities also often have their own as well.

Different jails for different crimes. There are more minimum security prisons for people who only stole stuff, instead of murdering a bus full of people.
