My suggestion would be to call a vet. In my oppinion I would suggest cutting it off because he is going to be in more discomfort with the nail dangling until it finally falls off which can be today or days from now. Not only would that be frustrating for the dog, but for yourself as well. I say if you cant afford to take it to the vet to handle the situation, at least call, and perhaps they can offer a suggestion of something over the counter that you can buy to help prevent infection.

Friendly Hello, Your going to want to clip that off so it does not tear any further. It may bleed. If you have some toe nail stop you can dab that on the area bleeding and the blood with stop. The pet stores sell that product. Great to have on hand for accidental nail problems. If you do not have that. Get some backing soda. Have it ready to dab the toe nail should it start bleeding. I dont know for sure but have heard that it works. So it may be something to at least try if you do not have the other products. Be sure to have a old towel so if bleeding occurs then you dont have it all over everthing. Blessings, Kelly

I'm not for going to the vet. It costs ~$40 just for the visit. If they're not in imminent danger, give it a few days.
I don't know about weather to cut it off or not. If it stayed on in one part, that means that part is probably stronger than the rest of the nail (probably hurt more to cut that). Plus, I think dogs bleed from their nails because there's a vein in it, so watch out for that.

why is "take him to the vet" not on your list? It should be, and that is what you should do. He might even need some antibiotics. If it was you, you would go to the doctor, not just cut the nail off.

I would first call the vet and see what they say. Unless you know exactly what you are doing, I would not treat him yourself. If you did cause an infection it could be a very bad thing.

he can bleed to death if it is cut off too far back. thats why you have a vet to clip the nails. i always thought it was the cats that would bleed but its not. its the dogs.

If it's that deep into the quick and it's not bleeding...it may be alright.....if it's bled or is actively bleeding, take him to the Vet and let them put some stuff on it to "cauterize" the quick and apply a topical anti-biotic
