The Holy Spirit speaking through someone. it can manifest during prayer or as a gift that God uses to speak to His people.
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Speaking in tongues is a common practice in Christian charismatic circles and involves some ecstatic utterance delivered while in a state of religious excitation and, allegedly, while under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
A person speaking in tongues might either start speaking a human language they could not otherwise know or a "spiritual" language, both of which are referred to in the New Testament: Acts 2:1-15 and 1 Corinthians 14:9.
Also Known As: glossolalia

Tongues is a language. Not a heavenly prayer that you speak to the Holy Spirit. I seen where one guy said its a language you do not know well he is right. When I say language I mean like french, spanish. english..etc..There is only two meanings of tongues in the bible I will paste both.
1) the tongue, a member of the body, an organ of speech
2) a tongue
a) the language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other nations
Next meaning is.
1) one who speaks a foreign language
So as you can see its only a language. Tongues was only used to witness to the lost.

Usually refers to references in the Bible where a mystical language was used by ancient prophets or seers to talk with angels or other heavenly host. Today, some people claim to be able to talk in this language; however, scant scientific, linguistic evidence indicates this is not valid.
Speaking in tongues could also refer to the speaking of an unlearned foreign language.

Church of God weirdos will tell you they're speaking in the language of god.
Now that that's out of the way, here's what it really is:
It's pretty much the same thing that babies do when they try to talk like we do at first.
And it's blatantly obvious to anyone that's not blind and deaf, that "speaking in tongues" is just someone putting together syllables that are easy to string together.
You can clearly see, (due to the fact that most people that "speak in tongues" aren't that bright) that they're not even being clever when they do it. Most of them will repeat the same few sounds over and over again, until their slow witted brain finally comes up with a new sound to make. It's hilarious to the rest of us. But I know it infuriates them to no end when we make light of it.

It refers to the time in Acts when the old Christians would yell out the Word of God in a language that they had no knowledge of.
