I'm talking about the UK Samaritans (i.e. helpline.) If anyone has done any work for the samaritans I would love to hear what its like. What type of skills do you actively use on a regular basis? Do you have to be very good and thinking on your feet really quickly? What happens if you can't think what to say? As you can see I have loads of questions like this that simply aren't answered on the Samaritans website. I am thinking of volunteering so any advice would be great. Thanks

I think you would be perfect because you have questions. Plus, once you begin volunteering it will become easier as you go. Good for you and us. To volunteer for anything is a wonderful, worthwhile thing for someone to do. Need more people out there like you.

Working for the Samaritans is not something we generally discuss, however, the main aspects of training are to do with having empathy and a genuine attitude towards people.

If there is something difficult to handle then we always have others to turn to to help, there is such a lot of support and i would reccomend it only to those whose disposition and strength of charachter can enable them to be unbiased no matter what the subject matter is or your own personal opinions.

I wouldn't worry too much about it! When I wanted to top myself, the bloke at the end of the phone just agreed that things were bad for me. I thought he was rubbish! I almost felt like asking for my money back (even though I hadn't spent anything)! Just for that, I chose to give my wrists a reprieve. Hmmm maybe there was some latent reverse psychology at work ...
