If he's doing this in order to soften the blow of breaking up with you then he's a Grade A Asshat'.
Talk to him ask him why he's being a jerk. If you can't work on the relationship with him because he doesn't want to. Then you need to end it. It take two for a working relationship to thrive.
I have been mean to people before but never on purpose. Find out if he really is doing this on purpose. Then take action from there.

This may be a valid point. I know of many guys who, to avoid a difficult breakup, sort of pre-emptively become ******* so that either the woman will break up with him herself, or so that she will not give him a hard time. It's childish and belongs on an episode of Dawson's Creek, but people do it.
Was he a jerk before? If this is new and very different behavior, then I would be suspicious. Of course, you should give the benefit of the doubt, b/c there could be a reason (some outside stress). But that doesn't mean you can't put him on the spot and make him explain disrespectful behaviour.

Yes. I was that jerk once upon a time. She would not take hints that I didnt want to be with her anymore. She was moving too fast in the relationship and would cry a river anytime I would try to break up with her. You need to leave him for good before you get hurt even more. He doesnt want to be with you and you MUST UNDERSTAND this. MOVE ON!

No, I never was rude. Matter of fact my ex-wife was the one that was rude to me. And she was the one to break us up. Yes, I would say a break up is coming! So get a head start and beat him to the punch!
