If your friends are inviting you out for dinner, and they are paying, they are inviting you out as a guest. Although it may be nice to offer to drive, I don't think that it's required. Usually, if your friends offer a night out, they do everything for the night out.
I'd bring a nice bottle of wine to offer your thanks to them and just offer to drive from their house. If they say yes, then cool.
Another way to show gratitude, leave the tip for the server. I dig that when I take my friends out and my friends dig it when they take me out.
Have fun!

You could always offer to transport them. You could also meet them at the restaurant. I don't think you have to provide transportation because they were the ones that extended the invitation.

You, as the guest, should provide your own tansportation.
You, as the host, do not have to provide transportation.
Just like if you were invited to a house party, or wedding. Does anyone provide rides? Um...no.
If the host or the guest were to offer rides to guests or other guests, then that is just lovely. But not required.

Whoever did the inviting (the host) should provide transport unless it was agreed that everyone would meet there.

One of your friends should provide transportation for you because they had invited you.

My first instinct was to say no. It would be completely rude to invite someone somewhere then expect them to shuttle you. I, personally, would think I was being used. But after thinking about it some more, I decided that if they are offering to pay then it shouldn't be an issue.

If they arranged to meet you there then you should provide your own transport. if they are paying you could offer to pick them up on the way if you live close to them.

If it's not a hassle, I always think it's nice. If you have to drive 10kms out of your way, it's not really worth the effort. Maybe you could bring a nice bottle of wine instead.

If your friends want you there, they should at least help to get you there. Unless you have your own transport anyway, of course.

If the dinner is in your honor, and you have no way of getting there, then yes.
If it is a casual dinner among friends, then no.
