Get out of the car business, and get into the people business.

Be excited. Enthusiasm sells.

Offer your customers savings by switching to lower models or used cars. "would you consider saving $1000 by looking at a stick shift?" "no, I want an automatic" They just told you they'd pay more for what they want. "Would you consider a car just like this one with a few miles, saving you 2 maybe 3 thousand dollars?" "no, I want new" or "sure" are the responses here. If they say no, they just told you they'd pay more for new, and you've set the parameters for negotiating. "I want a $2k discount!" "sir, I can do that, remember that 1 year old with 6k miles?" "I told you I want new!" "if I could sell the new one, at the same price I could sell the used one, I'd never sell the used one. I've got an idea! Tell me that if I get close to the used one....." "how close?"

Find out why they are buying. Do they need a second/third car for the family? do they want to trade up or trade down? Why?

Ask questions: What are 3 favorite things about the car you are driving right now? follow it up with their 3 least favorite things. They just told you EXACTLY what they are looking for in a car.

Learn to close. Closing is an art. You have to have the word tracks, the conviction, and the timing. You're a paid actor, and here is where you earn your money. I've hundreds of closes I use for every situation, you need at LEAST 30 to be competitive.

Look up a cat called Grant Cardone. He's a scientology freak, but he's got outstanding material.

Never say no, offer an alternative. You must ask for the order, every single time:

- That's too high! I agree with you sir, everything's too high these days. I bet you have a mortgage that too high, a light bill that's too high, and a credit card bill that's too high too. Don't worry about it, you'll adjust, just like everyone else. Sign right here and we'll get you ready for immediate delivery.

- That's not enough for my trade! Of course not sir, but you knew that before you got here. Let's do it anyway.

- Those payments are too much. I agree with you sir, but you're not going to make them all, just try 'em on for size. If you don't like it, you can always trade it in later.

Close, close, close, close some more, and THEN you negotiate.

The desk not control how much money you make, only how LITTLE.

Don't make the same mistakes other salesmen make: 80% of people will not buy their first trip. Of those 80%, < 10% get a follow up call.

Marry the customers for life. Call them 3 days after delivery to make sure everything's fine. Call them in 3 weeks, 3 mos, and birthdays.

9 out of 10 people know someone that buys a car with 3 mos of them buying a car. 8 out of 10 know 2 people that buy within the year.

If you are at a domestic lot: GET OUT NOW.

Learn all of the different closes for a sale. Learn your product cold, and review what is on the lot. Get bar tenders and others who meet the public to steer customers to you for a fee. Every time you meet someone, ask them if they, or someone whom they know, wants to buy a car.
If the customer objects to something, he is considering it, that is good. Learn how to make objections work for you. A customer who is disengaged is not usually a buyer.
Review why you sold a car, or why you did not, and see what you can do differently. Enthusiasm sells!!!
Get the customer touching the car and sitting in it, get him or her imagining using it every day, but talk business in your office.
Brian Tracey has excellent books on sales.
When you do sell, ask for referrals.
Always ask the customer what would make them buy today. Maybe you can do it.
Have toys or books for the kids while their parents are looking.
A married couple MUST shop together, or disaster looms.
Smile, and remember names, repeat them to yourself, over and over again. The name is key, say it often, people love to hear their name! Firm handshake!!
Always be closing, always be positive, start fresh with every customer, no matter how the last one was.
ALWAYS ASK FOR THE SALE!!! ALWAYS!!
When they agree to buy, shut up and write the order.
After giving the final price, at decision time, wait for the customer to speak, never speak first. Wait!!!!!
After the sale, call and ask the customer how they are doing, YOU be the one to take care of problems,
and you will have a repeating customer!
Work very closely with your sales manager. Ask for help in closing, you are new! Ask his advice.
Be familiar with Carfax and Vehix.
Be familiar with the Blue Book.

Care about the customer. Don't just see dollar signs all the time. If a customer is thinking of purchasing a particluar vehicle, don't just let them buy the most expensive one. If you think you may have a better option for them, even if it lowers your commission, suggest it. Point out the pros and cons of ALL vehicles they are considering. They will remember that and they will tell their friends. Sales is not about selling things, it's about building relationships. You want your customers to tell their friends what a good job you did for them, and then come back to you when they need something else.

To be successful in any sales you need to become knowledgeable about your product. Treat people with genuine respect and stay at one dealership. By staying at one place you will build a clientel and not have to depend on the walk-in traffic. also, by staying at one place you will up your chances of moving up in the company. Good Luck...

research basic psychological tactics. Commitment and consistency... Once a person says something, they don't like to change their mind. Get them to admit they like the car. Reciprocity... You do a favor for them, they feel morally obligated to do a favor for you. So give them something that makes them feel special.

I would recommend reading a college-level social psychology textbook. You will find about seven basic principles which you can employ to help you persuade people.

To be a good salesperson in general, you need to listen to the buyer, and don't put too much pressure on him or her. many car sales people, especially in larger cities
tend to be "pushy". you need to find that middle ground,
or niche, in order to find success.
