Joseph Smith (a relative of mine by the way) bought manuscripts written by one Solomon Spaulding. The manuscripts were for fictional stories with a religious theme, Spaulding having been a retired minister.
Probably as a result of tensions preceeding the Civil War in the first half of the 19th. Century many religious cults were formed, only a few of them remain active today. The Mormon Church is one of the largest of these.
Joseph was able to build a following, using the Spaulding manuscripts as translations of plates he said he dug up. Those manuscripts that survive are in Spaulding's handwriting, and occasional bits in Joseph's.
After his murder in Navoo, Ill. Joseph was made a martyr, and Brigham Young, with the aid of what today would be called "sidewalk magic" was able to take over and re-consolidate the group which had started to fractionalize.
The trek to Utah, the wealth gained from the ground and from the occasional massacre of passing wagon trains and the practice of plural marriage for men with no rights for women let the group survive and attract converts.
The bulk of the success of the Mormon church was due to Young rather than Smith. He is also the one who instituted traditions of self-reliance and helping others that have brought the members of the group through a lot of rough spots if not always cheerfully. Also, he began serious proselytizing to make up for membership losses, as well as the "Avenging Angels" who brought back members who had left.
Over the years the Mormons have been heavily involved in things such as youth groups and schools partly for public relations and partly as an extension of the proselytizing. Best known of their public involvement is probably their genealogical library records which vary greatly in accuracy and completeness depending on how committed the persons transcribing records were/are to doing the task accurately. Often the people who receive these public relations assignment do them grudgingly, so they are done poorly.

Joseph Smith and or Mohomed may have talked with angles. But from where? If you are jewish/christian we know bible says that Satan can come as an angel of light!
We have the dead sea scrolls to show us that the jews were the chosen ones. The Muslims teach that our bible (which is a historical document) has been changed. The dead sea scrolls say different because they date back before Mohomed! The scrolls date 200BC-68AD-Mohamad dates early 600 ad. Muslims claim they are the "true" dedendants from Abraham by Ismael but the bible (the truth) shows the chosen ones (jews) were decendants from Isaac, the one Abraham almost sacriced on the mountain.
Joseph Smith and his teachings go against bible is so many ways, if one just looks they can find the truth! They actually believe they will become a god of their own planet! (Key of theology pg 52) and much more:

According to the relative histories, no, no one else was present when either Smith or Hohammed was visited. The reason for the numbers of followers, I would say, would be charisma of the Prophets and the truths people saw in the messages.

are you trying to compare the two men? haha what a joker
Was anyone else there when God spoke to Moses at the burning bush? Muhammad is the last in a line of Prophets from Allah, that all called to the worship of God alone, including Noah, Abraham,Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon them all)

I wouldn't say it's exactly the same as Islam because the LDS religion maintains a Christian belief, it still centers on Christ, which is something a little more familiar and comfortable in western culture.
best wishes

to the fist guy that answered... no one saw Jesus come back to life at that instant but plenty saw him resurrected and the apostles saw him go to heaven in a cloud. You can make your own conclusions between Mo hammed and Joseph Smith by reading their books and looking at their followers life.

He was very charismatic as all cult leaders are, so charismatic that millions believe he found these golden tablets written in EGYPTIAN that then he found this huge pair of golden rimmed glasses that allowed him to look through them and de-code the writing, yet the Mormons somehow have lost these items. hahahahahah ooooohhhhhh my goodness how in the world can people be so stupid..........
