Is there an antidepressant that is not addictive, and that does not need to be taken for the rest of someones life? I have a fear of taking these for depression because I do not want to be on pills for the rest of my life, but I'm getting to the point where I have tried everything else unsuccessfully.

I didn't know any were addictive. I know that you have to come off them slowly. I don't think it is the pills that determine if you need to take them a lifetime, I think it is the cause of the depression. If it is just situational you will only need them until you adjust to the situation. If it is a chemical imbalance ( like mine) you will probably always need them. Of course there are alternative treatments that work for some people, like st. johns wort, 5htp, meditation, exercise, supplements, therapy.

There's a real stigma I've found with these drugs: it is somehow implied that if you take antidepressants that you are weak-willed or that you will become addicted (most antidepressants are not addictive, but do have some withdrawl effects if you stop taking them all of a sudden). Everybody's different, some of us are more biologically prone to depression, which isn't just feeling blue (another stigma), but feeling REALLY blue and nothing gets you any relief. Think of it this way, if you had diabeties you would take insulin, right?

Take luvox - I know friends that have taken it and come off it without side effects -they liked it while they used it and later in life (4 or 5 years) found they did not need it and just came off maybe taking one pill every 2 or 3 days if they felt the need to but other wise off and they are not on antidepressants ( or drugs or alcohol either) now.

I almost asked the same question today. My sister takes zoloft only 14 days a month for PMDD. I would think that it would throw off your system for the 1/2 of the month, but she feels GREAT. I am going to discuss this with my doctor because I need something myself. I have put it off for the same concern that you have. I have friends that had really bad problems once they went off Paxil and therefore, I always had a fear of them.
I am a fan of being natural like some people will say, but you have to get to a place in your life where you have the WILL to do yoga and meditate, I think that they can supplement medication. We should not mess with this, we need to talk to a doctor
Good luck

I am currently taking Zoloft and am pleased with its results. Many times Zoloft can be taken for a period of 6 months and then you can get off of it because the chemical levels in your body have regulated. sometimes its something you take continually. But if you take anti depressants remember not to just stop cold turkey because this may amplify the problems you started taking it for in the first place, gradually reduce the dose until your off.

Just because you get on them, doesn't mean you have to be on them for the rest of your life. You just have to get off them with the help of your Dr. or slowly so you don't get sick.
It really isn't a big deal, so if you think you need them or think they would help, try them, you might be glad that you could be on them the rest of your life!

I take wellbutrin XL and it helps me, If you have tried everything else unsuccessfully then worry about getting better and not whether it is addictive or not.
